My cousin has inspired me to play the guitar. He got one like 3 years ago and has tought himself everything he knows on it.

I've always been interested in playing an instrument, either guitar or drums, but he's convinced me to go with the guitar.

Is it easy to pick up? What's a good guitar to start with? Etc.?

from my experience you're either a rhythm guitar player/drummer type of guy or a lead guitar type of guy. If you don't have somewhat small hands, it is REALLY hard to play solos, at least for me. And playing fast riffs like Kirk Hammett takes a lot of practice. then at the end of the day you have to have some creativity to be able to create through the guitar. my advice would be if you don't seem like you're making progress with the guitar, try drums - some instruments you will take to right away, others will be a huge challenge. i slaved away on the guitar for a couple of years not making any headway, then picked up some drum sticks and was playing right away.
If you're starting on electric guitar, just get a Crate practice amp (15 or 30 watts), an imitation Strat (about $150-$200) and a good multi-fx with distortion/wah-wah etc. ($100?)
Oh yeah and once you start playing it's important to play with others as soon as you can, you will get so much better playing with other bandmembers than by yourself.

So I went into the Guitar Center by my college today, and I talked to a couple of employees there. They all recommend I start with a simple guitar, which is a major duh, I was like, you're not telling my nothing I don't know. But I didn't say that, I was polite and acted stupid. I asked like 4 what I should start with, and they all recommened a cheap Strat and a simple amp.

Person walks in and asks about beginner guitar, guitar center people say Stratocaster. LOL!

My first new guitar was an Ibanez, and I've never had a complaint about it. You can get a good one for cheaper than a lot of other top brands, if memory serves. I haven't looked at buying a new one in awhile.

I would also go with a Krate amp, again, I've never had a problem with one and they're reasonably priced, you can for sure get one that size for $150.00-ish.

I don't know, the one guy who originally helped me was so nervous, I was suprised he wasn't sweating. He saw that I had a Hendrix shirt on, so I figure that's why he recommended a simple strat.

What would you recommend Schaddy, can you go a little more in depth?

the stratocaster IS a good guitars, the FAKE strats aren't that great. there are Mexi-strats and US-made strats, US-made are much more $$$, and all kinds of custom strats that costs thousands and up. a squire fake strat is like $150...

phun, did he recommend me something that's worth starting with? The strat he recommended is made in Mexico. He said if I stick with it, and actually learn how to play, when I'm ready to move up i'll notice the difference big time in the American strat, and a Mexican one.
