I just got back from the temple, where we there was a musical program. Usually, it involved traditional Indian instruments (harmonium, sitar, tabla, etc.) played while hymns from our scripture are sung.
However, then this one guy got up and busted out a big, metal, bowl-shaped thing and placed it in front of him. He introduced it as an instrument from Switzerland, but I didn't pick up the name. Only when I came home and googled it, did I find out that its called a hang drum.
His performance really surprised the hell out of me. The instrument plays a bit like a steel drum, but its a lot softer and a lot more versatile, IMO. He started off with gentle taps that created more of an echo and sounded almost like when you rub around the rim of a semi-filled glass. But, then he built it up slowly, picking up the pace, until you could really feel the percussion side of the instrument. His arrangement had a more Indian feel to it than some of the clips I'm gonna post, but I thought it was worth sharing nonetheless. All in all, it was a pretty cool experience.
