Breaking news: the New York Knicks want to sign LeBron James(notes) to a lucrative contract to play basketball for them this summer. However, they're not the only teams gunning for his services. This is completely new information.
But guess who isn't too sure the Knicks will sign "King James?" You read the title, it's someone from the New York Knicks. In particular, Al Harrington(notes).

Here's what he told the New York Post:
"A lot of teams would love to have him and the Knicks are one of them," Harrington told The Post in the visiting locker room at Quicken Loans Arena Monday night.

"But if he's as loyal as he says, I would think it's very hard for him to leave, especially because he's home.

"If it was a different city, maybe not as much a connection, but at the end of the day, he generates every single thing for this whole state. It would be tough for him to make that decision to leave."

Exactly right. For all intents and purposes, LeBron James is Cleveland. He has to be pretty aware of the fact that, if he leaves, he'll devastate a lot of people. Not to mention he'll be leaving a lot of money on the table.

So let's give a hand to Al Harrington. He said what everybody's feeling. And even though he might not be in New York next year, at least he's trying to protect the fans in the likely event that LeBron James signs elsewhere. Pretty nice of him.

Joe Johnson Option B

When we think of free agents that could potentially land in New York this summer, thoughts usually turn to LeBron James, Chris Bosh and maybe even Dwyane Wade.

But if none of those players sign with the Knicks, there's another guy that would be A-OK with the team: Joe Johnson.

According to the New York Post: "Team sources indicated [Mike] D'Antoni would be very pleased to add overshadowed free agent Joe Johnson as a fallback. D'Antoni thinks Johnson is a great piece to build around."

Johnson was an All-Star this season, and his PER of 19.65 ranks him sixth among all shooting guards in the league.

If Johnson is the only big-name get for New York this summer, and David Lee also re-signs with the team, they'll be better.

But it's hard to see them stacking up with the East's elite, provided James stays in Cleveland.

Meh. I'm not sold on Joe. He's getting up there and his best years are behind him. Only way we should sign Joe is if we can get a young star who is capable of making us perennial playoff contenders.
