My wife and I are planning to visit Italy, but a good friend said that, in many ways, Croatia is just as beautiful...and a fraction of the cost. Plus, if we also wanted to visit Italy, it would be no problem taking a ferry across the Adriatic Sea for any type of excursion(s) we might plan there.

He also said the Croatian beaches are beautiful and a WHOLE lot less crowded.

Thanks in advance for any insights you may want to share.

No but I've researched it extensively and know a few people who have gone. I say do it, but Italy can keep you busy for a month or more by itself. You may want to pick one or the other depending on how much time you have. Also time of year is important, Croatia water doesn't warm up till late May, early June.

No, I've heard the same thing too. There's a Drazen Petrovic Museum in Zagreb that's on my bucket list, but its not near any coastline I think.

Personally, it seems like a bit much to just "add on" Crotia unless you have a lot of time.

One of my good friends just got back from Serbia tracing his father's family roots there pre WWII....met his Serb relatives and loved it...will go back every year. I prefer traveling off the beaten path when going overseas...I've heard Prague is one of the coolest cities in Europe to visit...never been to Europe...I like the Pacific rim for travel...My wife has been to Italy several times before we met...she loved it but people don't know it can get really cold in the north...if I planned a trip now I'd like to go to the Pompeii, Naploli, coast where there are palm trees and it's more warm.

One of my nurses was over there about half a year ago and she loved it.

Hmmm? I would have thought you would be interested in visiting Ukraine. :devilwink:

Why on earth would you have that notion? I like warm.

Ukraine has a temperate continental climate with cold, snowy winters and warm summers.

Go during the summer.

Yeah, but that road construction will delay your journey.

Dude, heh, I live in Nashville.

Moreover, the adage, "The closest distance between two points is generally under construction" is generally universal.

Prague is an amazing destination. Loved it so much. Ive done tons of world traveling and for what its worth the best countries to visit IMO are Italy, Thailand, and Mexico.

Tokyo, Barcelona, Rio and Cartegena all get honorable mentions, and all top my list of best individual cities Ive been to along with Rome and Bangkok.

I have a friend who loves the Balkans, she recently started in Venice and traveled by land to Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia. It really looked like a dream vacation route that I might consider one day. One day probably being next September but I have a few other options to consider also.

There's a ferry from Pula to Venice that takes about 3 1/2 hours. I could see staying in Croatia for 3 or 4 days, then ferry to Italy. I'm guessing renting a car in Italy would not be a good choice.....

Croatia >>>>> Italy

Croatia is magnificently gorgeous. We did both, on separate occasions, several years ago, and have been back to Croatia multiple times, and not Italy. Plitvice and Krka National parks are legit breathtaking. THE BEACHES! My God are they beautiful. Also lots of old cities.

Also, those saying Prague, are dead on. Another great place to visit

Why? Italy is one of the best places in the world to drive. They know how to drive and taking the small roads from say Turin to the Riviera is a wonderful experience.

Went on an Italy trip this summer and went to Split for a day. I thought it was fine. Basically just did the beach thing in a speed boat tour. Some really nice beaches there. Didn’t get to explore much. Montenegro is a lot of fun too.

Also I pretty much hated Venice. Overpriced. Stay for 2 days tops.

Oh yeah, didn’t get to do Krka. Photos looked great there. There are several all day tours that looked great. We didn’t have time for that as we were there for less than a day (cruise ship).

Good to know!

Seems to me that if you are going to Croatia for the first time for just a few days, then Dubrovnik would be the best city. There is a ferry to Bari Italy, takes 8 hours and Bari is probably out of the way. Vueling is a good low cost airline and can get you to Rome from Dubrovnik, Volotea goes to Venice but Ive never heard of them.
