Why isn't there an app or piece of software in cell phones that let you use voice recognition to send text messages? My wife gets pissed off at me when I ignore her texts while I'm driving. Hello, am I supposed to pull over every damn time she txts me with some stupid crap? Why hasn't this been thought of? Am I sitting on a multi-billion dollar idea, or am I smoking crack?

My phone has it. :dunno:

a few years ago there was a service you could send texts via calling a number.

i'll see if I can find what it was, I used it, it was ok.

I have often wondered about the fascination with texting when you can just call... but I do understand that it allows you to continue multiple conversations at once. I am not sure how different this is than just leaving voice mail... but yeah... I can see this being used more... just be careful of playing those voice text message automatically if you are playing the field. ;)

I hate talking on the phone. I'd much rather communicate in person, so for me a simple text of "Hey, wanna go grab a beer later?" does several things:

1) In many cases, it's quicker for me to send than it is to wait for the phone to ring and if it happens to go to voicemail, leave a message and wait for a callback.
2) It cuts out stupid small talk that most people feel obligated to engage in on the phone.
3) I am able to mutlitask while still holding the conversation. I can clean, cook, watch a game, etc without having to either try and do above tasks quietly and one-handed, or wear a headset in my home.
