$23M per is just ridiculous let alone 8 fucking years. What the hell is Gordon & Upton going to be worth now. This is just nuts.
 
...the RBIs don't bother me about Heyward...he's just not a power guy and it's not like he was awful with RISP...he's still young, he gets on bases, he steals bases, and he's one of the very best defensive OFers in the game.

...WAR of 6.5 last year....defensive WAR 2.0

...if Ellsbury is worth 7 years.$154 Mil ( and I'm not saying he is) I think that Heyward, at a younger age, is worth what he got. Contracts are getting crazier be the day...like I've been saying, I don't wanna hear any whining from the owners about how broke they are when the next years contact talks come up.
 
If the Cardinals can say bye, bye to Pujols, they can say bye, bye, to anyone. Lackey is getting on, Heyward is good, but he ain't that good. Screw the damn Cubs anyway!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Ron I'm old school WAR is just another recently made up stat that don't me jack to me. There's enough stats already. Bottom line is, as good of a defensive player that he is & he can steal a few bases, he's not a big power guy or RBI guy & DEFINITELY not worth $23M per. Kind of makes you wonder what guys like Upton & Gordon are going to get.
 
...Rick, obviously WAR is not the end all, but certainly neither is RBIs for a batter nor W/Ls for a pitcher...to a large degree RBIs is a team stat. But as far as WAR, if you look, Heyward has always been a very good player and WAR is just another tool to measure him as the overall player he's consistently been. And almost every team has it's own personnel who now keep up with all this saber metric stuff including WAR and it's become a valuable tool when assessing talent/prospects/players and even strategizing opponents.

...don't get me wrong, I think salaries are way out of hand but as far as what any given player is worth it really comes down to "what the market will bear"...and with all of these TV deals kicking in, the salaries are also going to continue to escalate. It's just the nature of the beast and the state of Baseball as it is right now.

...again, I think what a player is "worth" is relative...I thought the money that Cueto and Davis turned down was asinine but there it was...and you're like me, you probably would have played the game for free but I mean, if the owners are crazy enough to pay this much money the players would be equally crazy not to take it.
 
Oh I don't fault the players here Ron, I mean hell, take what you can get but just to touch on WAR again if it were such a telling & important stat it would be right there at the heading of every players baseball reference info, but its not. And to me that says that the stats that have carried this game through the years, HR, RBI Aver, OBP, SLG%, OPS TBs etc are more then enough to show a players worth. And like you I've never judged a pitcher on Wins & loses alone either.

And you're right, these owners are not going to be happy until there teams are playing before 1/2 filled stadiums because the fans can't afford the high ticket priced that they had to jack up so they could pay these ridiculous salaries. And I'm really hoping that no one pays more for Davis & Cueto then the amounts they turned down.

...the obvious and traditional stats are still in play, but what I'm saying is that in addition, more and more GMs ands coaches are looking to many more metric stats to evaluate players/pitchers. The stats you listed are the ones you and I grew up on and are fine but again, they are by no means the only ones that are used nowadays.

...if/when you have the chance, spend some time playing around at sites such as fangraphs.com ...some of it is pretty advanced and some not so much...but it will at least give you an idea of the many tools/stats that team use to evaluate.

Beltran - be interesting to to see if he can approximate Heyward's BATTING PRODUCTION ....and as far as his defense is concerned, we'll go with it until the 6-9 innings until a defensive replacement goes into RF.....and last but not least - after 2016 his 15 mil will be off the Yankee books and one of the kids Judge(?), Heathcott, Williams, should be moving in according to The Plan....and the Cubbies will be paying an excellent defensive RF 23 mil per.

A case could be made for Beltran having a better batting season (2015l than the guy who will be getting paid 23 mil per....and 2015 was the 2nd of an only THREE year contract given to Beltran by "Trashman"...... I am absolutely going to laugh my ever loving ass off if Beltran outhits, OR, comes close to oithits Heyward in 2016 as all of you twoface jackals so 't have the decency to admit just as Beltran is ready to move OUT, one of the Yanks young players/prospects should be right on schedule to move into RF. Tell us about the "ever changing plan"....lmao

I can go either way with WAR.

If one compares WAR with the NHL's + plus or - minus statistics such as +/- Goals scored by a Team, when a specific player is on the ice, or other stats that figure in +/-

Not really any difference than WAR, Imo....
