A history professor was shot and killed Monday as he sat in his office at Delta State University in Mississippi, Bolivar County Deputy Coroner Ted Ray told Fox News.
Warren Strain, spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, says the suspect is no longer believed to be on the Delta State University campus. He did not immediately elaborate, and it was not clear how investigators reached that conclusion. The suspect's possible whereabouts also were not immediately clear. Strain said a description of the suspect was not immediately available.
Police identified the victim as Prof. Ethan Schmidt, an assistant professor of history who recently published his second book.
The Delta State campus remains on lockdown, according to the university’s Twitter account. It's unclear whether Schmidt is the only casualty.
