Homeless to Harvard

It's a pretty inspiring story.

It's also pretty depressing that this story is much more likely in most of Western Europe and Canada than it is in the United States.
Former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, a Republican candidate for president, warned this fall that movement “up into the middle income is actually greater, the mobility in Europe, than it is in America.” National Review, a conservative thought leader, wrote that “most Western European and English-speaking nations have higher rates of mobility.” Even Representative Paul D. Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican who argues that overall mobility remains high, recently wrote that “mobility from the very bottom up” is “where the United States lags behind.”
Liberal commentators have long emphasized class, but the attention on the right is largely new.
“It’s becoming conventional wisdom that the U.S. does not have as much mobility as most other advanced countries,” said Isabel V. Sawhill, an economist at the Brookings Institution. “I don’t think you’ll find too many people who will argue with that.”
The American Dream isn't really American. The solution, clearly, isn't just tax cuts and deregulation. But it's also not just throwing more money at poor people. I encourage people to read that article. It's pretty interesting.

The first things we have to do is determine what we will do with the welfare society, ie, the entitlement mentality. Next, we have to stop promoting class and gender warfare for political gain. Until we get a handle on that, we will stay mired in muck.

We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people.

And fight less about it.
