Pictures on Australian television show at least three people with their hands up against a window, and a black flag with Arabic writing.
Hundreds of armed police have sealed off Martin Place in Sydney's central business district.
New South Wales police have asked people to avoid the area.
An Australian Broadcasting Corporation reporter said that gunfire had been heard at the scene - but this has not been confirmed.
Major landmarks in the city such as the Sydney Opera House have been evacuated.

Wow, they're a lot more calm on Aussie TV. American press is all about the hysteria.

I'm sure you're mistaken.

Australia has very strict gun control laws to prevent this sort of thing. :tsktsk:

This is a bogus event. Guns are illegal in Australia, only the military and the Police have guns.
Gunman don't exist.

Religion of peace. This is an asylum seeker too. Fucking dumbasses.

He was mentally ill. He boasted about ISIS but is a Shi'ite Muslim. The Aussie government just called him "loony."
