Saw this over at Dwight Jaynes blog.

Good question.

How does Roy compare to Drexler

Roy and Drexler
December 19th, 2008 by Dwight Jaynes | 6 Comments | Filed in NBA, Trail Blazers

I was asked last night about how Brandon Roy compares to Clyde Drexler. And you could make a case that in his third season in the league, Roy compares quite favorably to Drexler in his third season.

I can buy that. And I think Roy has a chance to be as good or better than Drexler before he’s done. But to say he’s as good at this time is foolhardy. Crazy, really. There’s just such a long way to go. For one thing, check out Drexler’s games played for his first NINE seasons in the league: 82, 80, 75, 82, 81, 78, 73, 82 and 76. Man, the guy played EVERY night. And toward the end, he was carrying his team on his back through a long playoff run, too.

So give Roy all the credit in the world. But don’t short Drexler, either. Being as good as he was, and staying as healthy and strong as he did, made for an extraordinary career.

It’s going to be fun to watch Roy take a run at that kind of greatness.

Dwight is right that Brandon has a way to go before he can be compared to Clyde (in terms of his overall career), but if you look at where he is in just his THIRD season and what Clyde had accomplished in his first three years its a different story.

At THIS point in his career Brandon has been rookie of the year, an all star and put up better numbers than Clyde.

These comparisons are premature, and starting to get ridiculous.

All I'll say is if Brandon can keep up this pace and the development to his game, he could potentially be the best ever to wear a Trail Blazer uniform.

How are they premature when we only compare the first three seasons of each player?

I'd say thats a pretty even and fair comparison.

Its eerie how the two (Roy and Glide) situations are.
Drexler is the man on a great team, but came up short to a certain #23 but not before a team of bad boys knocked them off first
Roy is the man on a team on the verge of being great and another 23 could be in his way as well but right now the C's (comparable to the bad boys in terms of physical D) are the team to go through.

Drexler was just so damn amazing physically. I think Brandon is way more skilled. His jumper is just a million times better, a million. He can handle the ball better as well.

I know we won't ever see Brandon run down the court dribbling with his head down and flying past people like they were standing still the way Clyde could, but if Brandon stays healthy and keeps improving even slightly he will be better.

Statistically they are similiar but their games were/are very different. Brandon is by far the more cerebral player, much more well rounded in his shooting, whereas Clyde was a freak athletically, a great shot blocker and one of the best transition scorers I ever had the privilege to watch. The fun thing is that we can even have this kind of discussion with a straight face ... think about that for a second?

Drexler, it was visually very obvious how he got it done. He was quicker, faster, a higher leaper than almost anyone he played against.

Roy, it's not immediately obvious how he gets it done. I realize he's crafty and cerebral, but every game he has several drives to the hoop where I can't see how he got through all the traffic...but in the end, the ball drops through the net.

But they both get/got it done.

I agree with most posters.... Drexler was an incredible athlete, while Roy has an insane combination of other talents that get the ball in the hole.

A key difference between the Blazers of the early 90s, and the Blazers of today is BB IQ. Porter and Drexler's teams were consistently boneheaded, making mistakes down the stretch that cost us close games, time and again. It used to drive me crazy that we simply had to have a large lead going into the last 2 minutes, or Portland would lose because Porter had not noticed the shot clock, or someone committed a series of dumb fouls.

This team is *crafty*, and makes very few mistakes down the stretch. Certainly we are more clever than most of our competition. Like the contrast in perimeter shooting (where the 90s Blazers were not strong), this Blazer team is reassuring in their competence.

Interesting tidbit from those stats pages...

Roy's 50th point (the 3 that sent everyone nuts) was also his 3000th point. He currently has 3002 points.

I'd say thats a pretty even and fair comparison.

Except that Clyde wasted much of his rookie season playing behind Paxson and Kiki, and even when he got on the floor he played primarily at SF.

That last dunk by Clyde in that video makes me wonder if he was on PCP or something because it seemed superhuman.

edit..no, I don't think he was on drugs..that was just a nasty dunk.

Someone wants to get banned again. Temper tantrums are not a good look for adults.
