I want us to overhaul the roster this summer and wanted to figure out how much we have to spend. Is this right?

Just going by Storyteller's site, with LA, Wes, Nic's caphold, Luke, Kurt, Elliot, and Nolan, and a first round draft pick we're at ~34mil. If Jamal and Gerald opt in, we're at ~49mil.

So potentially if the cap is ~60 mil (was 59 last year) we have anywhere between 24 and 11 mil of capspace.

This leaves us without a center and a PG. We can throw one max offer (~16mil), one > MLE offer (~8mil), and then use Nic's bird rights to match his offer (assuming ~9mil) and stay right up close to that luxury tax threshold. We will then have the vet min to fill out the roster.

All this means that we have to lose Camby, Wallace, Felton, Jamal, and GO in order to have any flexibility in free agency. The best option I think is to trade away Wallace now for some draft picks and ensure that he won't eat into our capspace this summer, while still getting value. Jamal will not opt in here, and he doesn't have much value now, so I don't think there's a point to moving him.

Deron and Hawes are the guys I go after with everything possible.

I can see us going after eric gordan and of course dwill if he opts out. With the left over im betting we sign Robin Lopez or Spencer Hawes. If we strike out on the two gaurds we max out hibbert once he is matched, I got a bad feeling we'll throw HUGE money at Brook Lopez.
Frankly if we cant land DWill no one this summer really excites me.

I'd try moving Babbitt for nothing. The extra 1-2 million or so would be more useful than him.

I don't see many teams out there wanting Gerald right now, tbh. Maybe Wallace and Babbit for Kwame Brown and Brandon Rush + GSW's pick this year. Rush is leading the league in 3pt% and could possibly help this year. Kwame is useless, but expiring. That deal with NJ-ORL that would have landed us 4 picks would have been nice, but it would have taken Deron out of consideration this summer for us as he would re-sign in NJ.

Brook Lopez would be an awesome signing. Why are you afraid of that? He'd be a nice consolation prize for the Oden debacle. If Oden had stayed healthy, we'd be giving him the max. Brook may not be what Oden could have become, but he's a very nice center who can man the middle for the next decade. Give him the max!

You won't steal Lopez away from NJ. He's restricted. Deron is not.

He's not very good. He put up points on a bad team, and is a far worse rebound than Aldridge. And he did just break his foot.

He's an okay scorer, but he duplicates everything LA does (but worse). I don't think the two would mesh very well.

It's possible, since NJ only has 3 days to match. Maybe not probable, but if they have dreams of Deron and Dwight, it'll take them some time to set that up. A max offer to match on Brook screw that plan up a bit. The hope is the indecision on Deron and Dwight's parts will allow us to swoop in.

Actually you have a point. It could be possible that NJ will be trying to land Howard and won't want to resign Lopez in process.

Remember the last time the Blazers had tons of cap space and used it wisely?

yeah, me neither.

lets sign a center who rebounds at the same rate as toronto's wannabe dirk for a team that has a hard time outrebounding there opponents. Lopez wouldnt be bad but at over 10m a year i dont want him.

You could sign Lopez to the max....

If you want to screw any chance the Blazers have of contending in the future.

Make OKC choose between Harden and Ibaka by offering a max deal at James. They can't afford both IMO.

I just took a quick run through Storyteller's team salary pages and it looks to me like over half of the teams in the NBA will have significant cap space this summer. It looks to me like there could be some serious competition for the better FAs. Given that, I hope that a deal can be made before the deadline to add to the team.

You want the Blazers to offer a max deal for James Harden?
OK........

Damn right! Harden is the second best player on that team. (I'm not actually sure who's the first.) And, after being ridiculously compared with Roy ever since he was at ASU, he's starting to deserve it.

This.
Hardens there best playmaker and passer while being a very solid defender. id offer him the max in a second if we needed a sg when he comes on the market. id rather have harden then gordan or any up and coming sg in the league.

Yeah he's a good player

Doesn't mean you give him the MAX. The MAX is for franchise players.

Yikes . . . the thought of Kwame Brown on the same team, sitting in a suit next to Oden is just about enough to make my head explode.

Maybe we're thinking too much about a center. Since there are hardly any (IF any) center worth spending the money on, perhaps move LMA to center and go looking for a PF. A strong rebounding one who can take some pressure off LMA.

As to PG, Calderon may do the trick.

We need a point guard more than a center. I'm tired of seeing us fail time and time again because of terrible guard play. We need a playmaker and a leader. Centers are once in a lifetime; but the good ones will be taken and over paid if they have to. You can find decent floor generals without paying max (Maybe Nash since he's old, Miller cause of age, Lin, buying draft picks, trading or offering talent for a veteran PG, etc.). I think if we don't do this, then we are toast. We need a PG to laugh at Nate's ISO wannabe plays and call his own when he's on the floor. I laugh so hard when I can actually foretell the play before it even happens. I suck at that shit, yet I'm money when it comes to Nate's offense. Sickening!

I both agree and disagree.

I think, in general, the two most important positions are PG and C (unless you have a couple of superstars at other positions, a good complimenting group and a great coach- how often does that happen?). But with our ability to move LA to center, I agree we need to go after a PG first and foremost.

That's what I am thinking. Aldridge can actually play center. He is making an effort each and every off-season to bulk up. He is close to "center weight and strength" already. Yeah the Aldridge of 3 years ago would be a liability at center. The Aldridge now actually could be one of the best in the league.

Yeah, ala Tim Duncan.
