Fans are pissed at the lockout and many will be hard to win back. I don't know how you can win Portland fans back with "Brandon Roy, your beloved star of the team, is gone! Get your tix now!" Even though Brandon's knees are shot, he is still a player who can do what he did in Game 4 against Dallas. Everyone acts like he's already gone but I'll be very sad if that is the case.

Even without a lockout, there is no way this front office has the brains or the guts to waive Roy.

There's nothing to be gained by amnesty-ing Roy now. We're not yet in rebuilding mode - we spend this season seeing if Oden is worth investing long-term in, and whether or not we should re-sign Felton and/or Wallace. Then, if (/when) it looks like our best case scenario with all of those is one round of the playoffs, THEN we let all our FAs go and get rid of Roy.

(That said: we are very close to the luxury tax threshold - so there is ONE reason to waive him, but it's purely financial. So if he does get waived, it's not because of "brains or guts", it's because Paul Allen has lost interest.)

Why aren't we in rebuilding mode yet? This is team hasn't been close to getting out of the first round, we have an extremely high payroll, as well as two "cornerstones" being permanently slowed by injuries.

Rebuilding is not the same as blowing up. Aldridge, Wallace, Batum, Felton and possibly Nolan Smith according to pizza guy to build around. The one thing about those very good players is that they all play a polar opposite style than Roy does.

im holding out hope that the long offseason helped him recoup a little of his lost glory (aka secret illegal european platelet injection centrifuge stem cell separation procedure)

Important question on the "when and how" of an amnesty, is it prorated during the season or can we wait until some point late in the season and still get the full benefits of waiving him and hence not having to pay the Lux tax on any of his salary? So do we have to do it now to reap the full benefit of having his salary off the books for tax purposes? or can we have the same result and wait to waive him to lets say 2/3 or more thru the season?

According to the current proposal, it is "prior to any season in the new CBA"

There is also the possibility that if we he stays and plays and his knees become really bad and then the possibility of "medical" retirement enter into the equation. That may be a long shot but who knows, then we could have him off the books and still have the amnesty and take a gamble on Oden "if" he ever comes back. I assume the new CBA will have some type of medical retirement provision like the last one?

Wow, super long shot IMO. I think regardless, he can still provide a few minutes each game somewhere. He is just not worth the max, which is why you have to amnesty him.

@DH5ZERO3 @KBergCBS The Blazers have to use the amnesty on Roy no matter how bad it hurts...Right?

KBergCBS Yep RT

so if you are reading that correctly we have to do it "before" THIS season begins to be able to have his salary off the books for this coming year? we can't wait a few months into the season?

the lux tax/contracts/etc usually reset for the new year every july 1st, so any time after this season but before then will get us the same effect for next season

I don't think we waive him off the bat unless the Amnesty is only a "you have a 1 month window to use it" type of deal. If its one we can hold onto for a bit I think we play this season and see who Roy does, if he isn't looking any good by the all star break then thats probably when we use it.

I think I am extra dense this morning so please bear with me. I only care for now about this coming season, when do we have to waive him to have him off the books for LUX taxes in the upcoming 2011-2012 66 -game season. Do we have to do it before July 1, 2012, or do we have to do it befor Dec. 25th, 2011?, or some other time?

i believe that as soon as the new cba is done, boom, the new season starts...salaries will already be set for THIS year. if he is amnestied any time before july 1st 2012, he will be off the books for NEXT year.

No, there has to be a time frame to waive him so he comes off the books for the 2011/2012 season since this amnesty provision does not go into effect until the new CBA begins., I'm guessing that is the first few weeks after the new CBA is done or until the season begins. And when you say "next" year I assume you meatn the 2012/2013 season?

If this is correct my guess is we waive ROY before the season begins since if we don't he costs the team about 30 mil for this season (15 mil salary and 15 mil lust tax), asuming we sign Greg. Note that the 30 mil will be prorated to a 66/82nd number. I can't see us keeping Roy if he costs that much.

A lot of Roy/Oden jerseys are on clearance at the Blazer's store FWIW.

i guess we will have to wait to see the details, im more thinking of the way the cba used to be, its a brave new world :)

if the effects are immediate and count against the cap this season, this could get ugly though, teams like washington can amnesty rashard and be what 40 million under the cap? they would have to sign 30 million worth of contracts for this season just to get to the minimum

uncertainty breeds speculation, no doubt

Roy scheduled 2 make $15M this season tho, so its unlikely Blazers will pay 2 c how he looks this season. Likely he's played last gm 4 Blzrs

all the Bball columnists are talking as if players can be amnestied for the 2011/2012 season which I believe is correct from everything I have read, if correct the key question is WHEN does the amnesty event have to occur , I am "assuming" it has to be before the 2011/2012 season (reg season games) begin - but that is the crux of the matter for me as to whether Roy is waived.

especially if Oden is signed which puts is over the tax threshold, then every dollar of Roy's contract is doubled, so his real cost is twice as much. I can't believe mgmt would pay 30 mil (prorated at 66/82)) to "see" how his knees are, unless he can still be waived later in the season and he still comes off the 2011/2012 books.

They hopefully have Crawford on speed dial if they get rid of Brandon. Man that will be a tough sell to fan base.

Winning cures everything. If the salary cap flexibility after getting rid of Roy makes us a better team the fans will be sad to let Roy go but they still will support the team.

I think if he looks like he can play fairly well, the best thing is to trade him at the trade deadline to some team that is in the playoff race and needs a spark off the bench; this would also be a team that does not have a amnesty candidate on their roster. I was thinking that then we could get some value back for him because i don't think he really fits with the team anymore; but then I realized that the new team would still be responsible for paying his salary even if he is waived and I don't think they have that thing like MLB has where the trading team can agree to pay most of the salary... So, the most prudent thing seems to be to wait a year but I really think this will hinder the development of the team.

why is it "prudent" to wait if he can come totally off the books now? Does anyone think his knees will get better? if anything they get worse as he plays. Lets start NOW with a team without Roy and add the players now and next yr that we need without him. Frankly IMO waiting a year does nothing for us and if anything delays the process of playing and developing without Roy.

You do know the Blazers pay him WHETHER OR NOT they amnesty him? So if it's "unlikely Blazers will pay 2 c how he looks this season" that also applies to seeing how he looks playing for the Heat or Lakers, right?

Given that Amnestying Roy won't get us under the salary cap, speed-dialling Crawford would result in a very quick conversation.
