thats what I'm saying, when people like Kanye West and 50 Cent come to town, they are going to want crazy nice hotels (as well as the players). I don't think they have enough quality hotels for these rich people.

You would think our huge amount of strip clubs would help draw the 50 cents of the world.

The hotel excuse is bullshit! We hosted a couple NBA Finals back in the day and did just fine. Tournament of the Americas went off without a hotel problem. Stern is sticking it to us for the whole gambling thing. Shit, Salt Lake City hosted BEFORE they built new hotels for the winter Olympics.

Now, WHY is it the All-Star Game has never been played in Portland?? Is it truly due to lack of luxury hotels???
same reason since forever, to annoy you and have this annual thread appear

STOMP

Two words: Chris. Dudley.

Stern has a long memory.

The ASG in Seattle was played in the Kingdome also. Huge venue.

My dad took me to that game. I have a piece of notebook paper that has everybody from Larry Bird to Bill Russell to Magic to Rolando Blackman's autographs on it. When I was a kid, that was my coolest possession. Didn't get to go to the dunk contest where Jordan beat Kersey in the finals though!

May also be because of Oregon having Sports Lottery, although the Las Vegas game pretty much blows that theory out of the water. Portland will be getting some NCAA games for either the 2009 or '10 tournament, don't remember which, so maybe if those go smoothly the NBA will be forced to reevaluate Portland as a host.

From what I have heard it is NOT the number of Hotels in Portland, it is the lack of not having ONE large luxory hotel that can accomodate everyone. Whether or not it is BS I have no idea, but apparently they don't want everyone spread out in different places. What is Portland's biggest hotel?

It is the hotel issue. There are not enough hotels within a certain proximity of the Rose Garden. They are not going to stay in surrounding cities.

You have former players, players in the all-star game, players in the rookie game, players in the Saturday events, those players families, the former players families, executives, groupies and friends of current and former players, you have all the celebrities that buy tickets for the game, you have people flown in for the game by businesses as part of a weekend of dealing, you have Stern and his executives.

According to the Oregon Sports Authority, the main issue is hotel space close to the arena; the city of Portland lacks the large "headquarters" hotel needed to host the NBA and media entourage which accompanies the game.[44]

its annual All-Star Game, which officials say attracts 25,000 visitors

Drew Mahalic, CEO of the Oregon Sports Authority, says the authority has supported two failed attempts in the past decade by the Blazers to lure the All-Stars.

"The feedback," Mahalic says, "was that we didn't have the large headquarters-type hotel that could accommodate the entire NBA delegation."

Portland's largest hotel is the downtown Hilton, which has 782 rooms but is across the Willamette from the Rose Quarter and has rooms in two separate buildings.

Apparently that's not good enough for the NBA, which likes to take over an entire, arena-side hotel in the 800-room range.

While having an All-Star Game here would be great, I'd much rather have about 5 years worth of NBA Finals games here. Last time I checked, Stern doesn't get to vote on that.

As someone much smarter than me said, "a princess liner tied about 500 yards from the RG should work very nicely."

Or a couple of PA's yachts.

Denver didn't have one large hotel when they had the ASG here, although they have one now. And certainly there wasn't a major hotel close to the Pepsi Center.

Portland in February is rainy. It's not glamorous. It's not a hip-hop kind of town. And it won't be seeing the ASG for at least a decade.

That Motel 6 by the convention center is big enough!
