Since I'm going away for college now I need to get myself a laptop. I don't feel like tugging my desktop back and forth especially since it's a piece of shit anyway.

I was originally planning to buy a macbook. They're overpriced but highly reliable. Now I realized I really should save that $1000+ for future needs.

I don't need some powerful gaming laptop, but just something that won't cause any problems. I'll need it for school work, and just for shooting the shit, you know, watching movies/videos, and just browsing the web.

So help me out!

Someone here recommended an ASUS. Bought one for my wife. Love it!

If all you are going to do is the above, just buy the cheapest one at Best Buy or another retailer. you don't need much to surf the web, do school work, or watch movies. If you use your laptop as much as I do, they break after 2-3 years anyway.

The Acer or Toshiba should be able to do anything you would need it for at $329.99

I will second ASUS. I've had a Macbook, Toshiba, and now an ASUS, and of all of my laptops, it's my favorite by far (considering price, build quality, and features).

HP's good and reliable and durable

HP laptops suck ass. I bought one a few years back. 3 mos after I bought it they sent me a letter saying that my model has over heating problems, bad motherboard design with the video processor being to close to the CPU. They were offering an extra year on the extended warranty for half price. I googled what was going on and I was shocked about the complaints about their laptops and their shitty customer service.

Lol ok, ive had 3 laptops since 2000, all three have been fantastic, no prob

I've had 2 Acers, 1 Toshiba and 1 Sony. IMO the Sony was way overpriced and sucked. The Toshiba was cheap and good, so were the Acers. The only thing that would go wrong on the Acers or Toshiba, is that the wall plug couldn't plug into the laptop to charge it anymore, because the laptop wouldn't read the charge. It's not worth it to spend a bunch on laptops unless you want a gaming type if you're into that. And at that point I would want a desktop for gaming anyway.

My favorite brands in Laptops:

1.)Toshiba laptops are the shit. I recommend a Satellite series.
2.)HP are good but too damn expensive.

Make sure it has at least 2GB of RAM, or else you'll probably toss that POS in the garbage bin soon.
The hard drive depends on the user, I suggest anything above 250GB.
For Processor I suggest anything multi-core, singles processor is just plain shit.

Even 2 gigs of ram is kind of on the low side. 4 gigs for a 32bit OS and 6-8 gigs for a 64bit OS.

Not for me.

Some key factors to consider:

- Battery life (and I'd suggest reading into the features of the newer core ones-- intel has made some fantastic improvements)
- FSB
- L2 Cache
- Ram
- Hard drive space (and speed)
- Weight
- Price

Depending on how you value the above factors by importance, you can make a smart decision yourself.

I'm not sure what kind of specs I need.

Look wise, Asus seems kinda cute. Other than that, I don't know much about it.

I've heard a lot of my friends having problems with HP. I'll definitely pass on that.

I've had bad motherboard problems on the ovepriced Vaios.

Go with Asus.

just sack up and spent the extra $300 get a macbook. it'll make your life a lot easier.

Do not get HPs. they load their laptops with a shitload of bloatware.

Whenever I recommend laptops for business (PC) I always say Lenovo is probably the best. Toshibas have had a great reputation as well. Dell has really gone downhill, I don't trust them anymore.

When I get a new laptop I'm going to get another Gateway, they are good computers that last forever. The Gateway I have now has taken one hell of a beating between me, the dog, and the cats, AND has basically run non-stop for two years and it's still going strong.

This is probably the best value you can get in a laptop right now.

The problem is that Newegg sells out almost as soon as they get some in stock.

Gateway is horrible. they succeeded in the late 90s because of their retail stores, but then their parts and quality fell to all hell. not sure about them recently though. I think they got bought by ASUS.

What the hell are you talking about?

Gateway's have been highly recommended by experts since they where bought by Acer, and their laptops are often on the top of best buy lists in various categories.

Lenovo Thinkpad. I have owned 3. They are powerful, durable, reliable and have a great keypad. What else do you want?
