I would call it the most inspiring book I've ever read, The Ascent of Man by Jacob Bronowski.
If this book doesn't inspire you then nothing will, it's that good. They made a miniseries out of it that used Bronowski as the narrator and showed it on PBS back in the mid 70s. I can recommend this book above all others.
Read it and get back to me.

I’m waiting for the updated version that reflects current times. It’s called The Descent of Man.......

One of the biggest faults in Darwin's Decent and Bronowski's more uh uplifting emulation is that we cannot be our own Gods despite any complex carried in our genetic disposition. It is quite ironic that man's ascent and descent can both be not only mapped in science, but is all to easy to foresee.

Survival of the fittest. If we don't take the steps to ascend someone else will too. Our desire for competition which has been necessary for our ascent will also be our downfall.

Nowhere in Darwin does it say anything about being gods.

No it doesn't. I am speaking to what our thirst and quest for knowledge and power in our ascent has led us to.
