The Idaho Stampede suffered a 109-104 loss to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on the first night of a back to back series.
The Vipers outscored the Stampede 41-31 in the third quarter, extending their one point lead at halftime to 11 points. Idaho guard Pierre Jackson kept the Stampede in the gamewith 17 points in the third quarter alone. After being down by as much as 14 points in the fourth quarter, Richard Howell brought the Stampede within two points with a short jumper. The Vipers forward Robert Covington split a pair of free throws and Chris Johnson followed up with a lay-up with 1:33 left in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for the Stampede.
Idaho was led by Pierre Jackson (40 points) with his fourth 40-point performance of the season. Portland Trail Blazers assignee CJ McCollum added 13 points, six rebounds and six assists in just 17 minutes off the bench. Richard Howell pitched in with 14 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort.
Rio Grande Valley was led by Robert Covington with 36 points and 14 rebounds on assignment from the Houston Rockets. Chris Johnson scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Vipers brought down 18 offensive rebounds.
The Stampede were able to hold Troy Daniels, the league's fourth leading scorer, to eight points as Daniels shot 2-17 from the field. Both teams shot a combined 11-64 from beyond the arc.
Idaho (9-6) will host Rio Grande Valley (13-2) again Saturday night at CenturyLink Arena.
