I feel sorry for Greg. I hope he recovers and enjoys some sort of a career in basketball.

For starters, Portland isn't a great city to live in if you're a young, African American male with a lot of money," Greg explained with an embarrassed grin. "But that's especially true if you don't have anybody to guide you. Since I was hurt the entire season, I was on my own a bunch and didn't have veteran teammates around to help me adapt to the NBA lifestyle

That second year in Portland I pretty much became an alcoholic.

Tough few years for that young guy ... I hope he gets some breaks going forward.

This article can do nothing but enhance our chances of landing those awesome elite FA's

Maybe they should focus hard on foreigners?

I am sure bashing the hell out of POR medical staff will do wonders for signing free agents.....

It is gotten to the point now, where even if you think the medical staff is good an is not the problem...you almost have to let them go just based on the perception....

Seeing the words "worst in the NBA" to describe your medical staff....just lingers out there...takes on a life of its own and becomes the perception....

They have to aggressively address it and make whoelsale changes....

Wow. That was eye opening on many levels. Greg is fragile... physically and mentally.

It's too bad teams don't make players go through psych evaluations before they select them over another can't miss prospect.....er wait?

<shakes head>

Waaaaaayyyyy too fucking soon. No wonder he hates Portland - "fans" like you!

(I'd like to laugh at that, but I can't.)

Seriously, he checks into a hotel room on the 8th floor with a blind dog. What did he think would happen? I feel really bad for Greg and wish him the best but that wasn't the smartest decision with Charles Barkley McLovin.

Yeah, no shit. Which is the reason I said I wanted to laugh. As a dog-lover, such a tragedy. But I mean, what's any dog, let alone a blind dog, doing chilling on a balcony with open rails? Derrrr...

I really feel for the guy. And it hurts all the more that he's the kind of person I could really love to root for. I know that there are plenty of people that can root for players that they know are total assholes just because they're good at basketball, but I can't do that. Greg is clearly smart and funny and nerdy, and should've been a perfect fit.

Sigh. Sucks about his dog and his cousin, too. I hope he finds happiness somewhere. But it's pretty clear that if some miracle (nanobot surgery?) were to happen and he could play basketball again, he would never consider signing in Portland. And I wonder what the front office thinks of this:

Portland's medical staff has long been rumored to be less than stellar. [NOTE: This seems like a good time to point out that Portland had only a 5 percent chance of landing the no. 1 overall pick in the 2007 lottery, which means that there was only a 5 percent chance that Greg and his injury-prone body would get paired with a medical staff considered by many to be the worst in the NBA.]

That was the number one thing I got from this article. I had my suspicions, but this no doubt confirmed it.

That interview confirmed most of the negative thoughts I developed for Greg as setback after setback, and excuse after excuse (primarily from fans, but it still made an impression) accumulated.

Here's a thought, Greg. Do you think Kevin Durant gives a shit where he's playing? He's in the middle of bumbfuck America, yet he's a baller who apparently thinks that the practice facility in OKC is just as good as a practice facility in Los Angeles.

What a disaster. Just a horrendous decision in hindsight. I'd rate it as even worse as Sam Bowie, simply because at least Bowie had the trade value to net Buck Williams.

The biggest draft bust of all time, Greg Oden, and he has the passive personality to match it.

Yeah, THAT would've stopped his knees exploding.

Not at all, but with reports from KP and others that they knew there might be risks with his knees, and him being fragile mentally, it coul dhave been an easily avoidable mistake

How have I never seen this video? It's from the author of the Grantland article. He was a walk-on with tOSU.

Just bought that dude's book for my Nook. Anybody who can make a video that awesome deserves my cash. Reviews of the book are hilarious, anyhow.

He's Luke Babbitt with a personality.

I'm so tierd of Greg Oden and his "aw shucks" personality.

I didn't see Brandon Roy, LA or Nick Batum have any trouble living adjusting in Ptd being young, rich and black.

Truth is Oden's issues with Ptd were Oden's individual issues. He never showed a passion for the city or the game of basketball. He wants to use Ptd as an excuse, the medical staff as an excuse, alcohol as an excuse. He wants to point to all the reasons and excuses for his lack of performance on and off the court.

Maybe . . . maybe, GO had no control over his injuries. But he had control over the person he bcecame off the court. And what I saw was a nice guy who was more committed to his social life (drinking and partying) than he was to basketball, the Blazers and the city of Ptd.

He could of left with either nothing to say or someting positive to say. Instead he handled this interview like he has handled his basketball career . . . coming across as a nice guy but not one who seems very driven in life or even thinks about some of the things he is saying.

Dealing with another season-ending injury and now nude pictures circulating on the Internet, Greg sought out sports psychologist Joseph Carr. In the spring of 2010, Greg began seeing Carr regularly, and he paid for their sessions with his own money. Months later, when the season started, the Blazers also hired Carr, who started showing up at games and practices. Greg said he saw Carr talking to Blazers front office personnel on several occasions. This seemed like a conflict of interest, Greg said, and he couldn't shake the suspicion that Carr was sharing details from their sessions with the team. In response, Greg stopped meeting with Carr and his distrust of the Blazers deepened.

That sounds like exactly the type of shady bullshit a Paul Allen/Bert Kolde operation would do. Way to go, you fucking idiots.

portland has a lot of thick white chicks, kind of ideal for a rich, young black man

I heard about Oden's dog a while back from a friend who works with some Oden's friends. The sad thing is, after it happened, he was afraid the media would blame him, and it would become a big media story about how he did this terrible thing and how it was all his fault.
