That are complaining about the signing of 2 of the top 5 free agents in this years class. By the time this off season is completed, it is not out of the realm of reasoning that we also have added Beltran and retained Cano. In addition, I feel that this allows for more flexibility with a player like Ellsbury. What if they decided that Ellsbury long term, is better than Beltran for 3 years at 48 million.

Another thought that I have is what if this is the blueprint for the next 3 years.

1) Go nuts in Free Agent Signings this year
2) This allows for an influx of quality players and creates a competitive team for 2014
3) Turns the focus here after on player development

What I feel the naysayers are missing is the DNA that makes the Yankees the Yankees. An organization that has put a team into the playoff for what 15 of the last 17 years. No other franchise has done that. That run was largely created by a 2 or 3 year run of developing and trading for players that formed the nucleolus for the recent success. Most of this was done with money. Money to buy, to retain, and take chances. With the end of the core 4 era, they were faced with rebuilding on the fly. And they put there money where their talent wasn't. Ask Pittsburgh what losing feels like, Ask the Marlins what its like to watch a owner give away a future hall of famer at age 24. So we miss on a few, but the organization keeps trying to add the best available resources available to this team we love.
 
...yup, pretty much the way it's always been with the Yanx.

...as far as the "naysayers", I'm sure the same people who find fault with the McCann signing will also find fault with acquiring Elsbury, or for that matter, virtually anything the Yanx do. ...It's like "Yeah, McCann and Elsbury are fine players, but..."

There is a huge difference in signing a giambi...a CC a text vs elsbury. He may be a"top free agent" but this guy is not a difference maker. I'm happy about mccann as its a big improvement...jacob..no.

There is a difference between signing just to sign and signing a player to be a difference maker...just because he is the best available doesn't make him the best...for the money being spent on Elsbury, id take Gardner and a power bat. Just don't throw money out the window because he is out there..

Gardner on base career average 352 Ellsbury 350...

now you want to say that Ellsbury slugging is higher...that is fine..but what happens when he is away from the Monsta?

I hope I am wrong but over the next 7 years...I don't see that HUGE of an upgrade for the money they are spending.

lets hope that there are more 2011 seasons for Ellsbury....if not...yawn.

I understand where your coming from. But if there isn't a difference maker this year, do you just throw money out there just to say you spent money?
Who are the free agents next year? Remember we are talking 7 years.....

we rather give Ellsbury that money than our own home grown talent, who may I say is leaps and bounds better than Ellsbury...if we don't resign cano and he gets 7 years for 200m then im going to be pissed off to no end. Cano at second base with his bat is a lot harder to replace than Ellsbury is.

When we got Paul O'Niell from the Reds, he wasn't suppose to be to be a difference maker and when we got Scott Brosius from the A's he wasn't suppose to be, and so on and so on. You look for upgrades at positions and then sometimes you get lucky. Ellsbury and McCann represent huge upgrades, regardless of all the stats that may tend to support otherwise. Hell there was an amazing stat on the comparison of Cano and Wright. One wants 200 mil the other signed for 147 I think. Wrights numbers are better across the board except batting average.

Brosius and O'Neill weren't getting paid ELITE status though. Huge difference...also Oneil was a trade not a FA

...the Yanx have no choice but to spend if they want to erase the memory of last year and if they want to win NOW, and it does appear that they indeed want to.

My point is Al, is that regardless on how they come to a team, they can only be difference makes after the games are played, not before. You just don't know... But if you went to a racetrack, you would like to see a horse that has won before instead of a nag that never has...

...so in other words, this year you'd rather bypass a potential MVP candidate in lieu of the possibility of signing some other FA next year?

...again, the Yanx are trying to win NOW.

...exactly...we already know what Elsbury is capable of. And I'd rather have him than a prospect who "projects" to eventually be very good someday.

You nase potential mvp on his one terrific season...I hope that is the case because unlike 2011...2013 was not a mvp season

so if we lose Cano (a lot closer to an MVP) for Ellsbury based off one terrific year..what have we accomplished?
 
The 2 are not connected. The Yankees will go 8 years and 200 for Cano. The signing of Ellsbury was to address other areas of weakness. I agree Al, losing Cano would be devastating, and a team that signs 2 free agents for big money are not going to ignore their own star. however, if that star thinks he's worth more than anyone else in baseball then he (the Player) has a right to sign elsewhere. What if he wants 7 for 30 mil, what would you do?

difficult situation...but...I hold fast that Ellsbury is not a 20+ million dollar player...that is going overboard just because he is the best outfield on the current market.

I think the two are hugely connected btw...I don't see how they pay Cano with dishing out for Mcann and Ellsbury. but one can wish right
 
And Al I will give you that, Hell I will give you that in regards to about 90% of all MLB players. But on a team that has money to burn, not saying its right, you always overspend in free agency, always.
 
I agree Major...its the devil of free agency to blow the salary structure out of wack for a player that if he plays up to 2011 fine, yes...big huge success...but if he doesn't...wow is that an albatross of a contract
 
And that is why the farm has to get better. People site the Rays and the Cards for example on how they can infuse talent from within, but nobody says how many of the other MLB teams are falling behind to. It's not only the Yankees.
 
As long as they spend and put a good product on the field and don't sit on their wallets like the friggin mets I am happy. Pretty much all the higher echelon free agents are overpaid so this is not that surprising. Don't think robbie is looking to work in obscurity in the northwest so that will get done and now due to other signings sooner rather than later before the music stops and theres no chairs left to sit in. Boras last seen laughing his balls off and sending note to cano how do you like novice jay z now baby

oh as a Yankee fan I love the fact my team goes out and tries to put the best team possible on the field. I just worry that in a couple of years we hear the same stuff we hear now with CC, Arod, Tex contracts.

Ill take our team using their massive profits to put back into the team over a cheapskate ownership like Miami and Tampa to a lesser extent.
 
As long as they spend and put a good product on the field and don't sit on their wallets like the friggin mets I am happy. Pretty much all the higher echelon free agents are overpaid so this is not that surprising. Don't think robbie is looking to work in obscurity in the northwest so that will get done and now due to other signings sooner rather than later before the music stops and theres no chairs left to sit in. Boras last seen laughing his balls off and sending note to cano how do you like novice jay z now baby
