Insight: NC Tickets @ $2700/ea vs empty Orange Bowl Stadium

According to stubhub, NC tickets, nose-bleeds, are being listed on the low end at $2700 a piece. Those who got their tickets for $800 ea, should be proud.

This is an interesting contrast to the Orange Bowl, which was Stanfords first major bowl in, like, forever. The stadium appeared 1/3f empty. Stanford doesn't only travel like a pathetic B school, football seems to be an after-thought.

Stanford has done quite well lately with recruiting despite this being the case. A rabid fanbase like Oregon's is a great bonus but I doubt it factors much for most recruits when they're deciding where to go.

I also think it's why we see NFL players like Haloti, Dickson, Rosario, Dixon, Stewart, WTIII, Ward, Chung, Unger, Lewis, Igor, Byrd, Unger - who continue to show public allegiance and pride towards Oregon.

One thing you didn't think of: Stanford classes started Monday. And at Stanford, if you miss the first day, you are axed from the class with a fail.

Stanford students axed if they miss a day of class while supporting the schools football program? You sure?? That's a bummer.

did I say there wasn't? Being associated with a program like Oregon's means a lot more then playing in front of it's great fans. It means having outstanding coaching, facilities, and getting a quality education while living in the heart of a vibrant college town.

My point is that there are other factors that probably matter more to the average PSA then how full the stands get. Things like... proximity to home, quality of education/academic support, athletic facilities, childhood rooting interest, relationships with coaches, quality of the football team, early opportunity to play, what is the city like, the weather... all factor at least as much to a HS senior trying to choose a course for their life. As proof of this I'd suggest taking a short look back over the last few years of recruiting where Stanford has done quite well for themselves despite having even worse fan support then they "enjoyed" this year. Something besides crappy fan support is drawing a lot of quality student athletes there

What would you wager is a highlight that staff and current players describe to recruits?

when leaving town after an OV recruits often say that the highlight of the trip was the game and the fans. But when it comes time to make their college decision and they're asked... what are the most important factors for you in making this decision? fans rarely warrant any sort of a mention while education, relationship with coaches, etc... consistently do.

Oregon is the only Pac-10 school that regularly sells out it's games, yet other schools often win out when going head to head on a prospect. The USC fan experience is terrible compared to the Ducks yet they've consistently been in the discussion for top class over the past decade. I'm sure it only helps recruiting that Duck fans are so supportive and I'm sure that players really do enjoy playing for such enthusiastic fans, but pretty obviously other things are often more important then fan support for PSAs or Stanford and USC would have a hard time recruiting.

Ummm, ok. I'll take all that into consideration, but I've been following recruiting for ten, maybe fifteen years. If I had a dollar for every time a recruit said the environment, including gameday/Autzen, was a factor, I could buy like, 1/80th of a ticket to the NC game.

yes, please take into consideration that the statement you took issue with was that most recruits don't heavily consider fan support, not just the few that go to Oregon. Again I site that other schools who don't enjoy Oregon's level of fan support still do well. Throughout this exchange I've been wondering how anyone could really be debating this as it seems pretty indisputable/obvious.

Getting into who's the biggest fan pissing contests isn't really my thing, but I did graduate from UO 20 years ago now. I've been a rabid fan since my freshman year and recruiting/draft time is probably my favorite thing across sports. I don't pretend to be an expert but I share what I know and offer some opinion... I try not to confuse the two
