I just got a ipod nano for Christmas and aside from turning it on I haven't done anything with it because I heard you need a credit card to sign up for itunes which you need to use it. I don't have a CC (don't lead me money if you want to get it back) so I'm wondering what's the deal.

I'm going to hook it up and see what's up but want to know if I'll have to wait four to six weeks to use the darn thing.

Also can I watch videos on it, ie TV shows?

You certainly don't need a credit card to put songs on your Nano!

First, you have CDs, right? Just rip them (WMP will do that) to a compatible format (MP3 is just fine, but there are others) and it's simple to transfer them to your Nano.

If you have music on your computer now, you can transfer it to your Nano without a problem.

Video is a little trickier. You have to convert the video from the common formats you probably have now (.avi, .wmv, .rm) into the MP4 format.

There are tons of free converters out there. I'm sure someone here can recommend one.

i'm going to look for an apple store but i live in Toronto and haven't heard of it, sounds like a rich mall kinda thing (not the ghetto malls i got around here).
i'm a writer so i have no problem paying for music and shows (assuming it's a fair value) but i do have about 100 songs that i've downloaded on limewire and use on my other mp3 player that i'd like to get on there.
thanks for your help guys and any other tips are appreciated.

Aren't their two part to the itunes software? One part for managing the songs and playlists on the ipod and the other part for purchasing songs from the itunes store.

the first Canadian apple store opened a few weeks ago in a rich mall in the north end of the extended city. i can get there easily by subway. i also want to get a cover for it so i'll make a trip of it.

wow thats exactly what i did one yesterday, I went in with £35 ($70) and i got a case for £15 ($35) and a £20 itunes voucher. Although i was expecting to see dirt cheap cases i had Nooo luck what so ever lol.

I don't know if it's the same there, but the cards can be purchased anywhere pretty much. Every department and convenience store I know has them.

Yup, it's just one program. You can use it to manage/play the music on your computer or your ipod, and then you can go to the itunes store within it and buy whatever you want (which is what I'm assuming the card is needed for).

So unless music is being purchased, there is no need for a credit card at all.

Prison Break Seasons 1, 2 and half of 3. That's great. Then there's Fawlty Towers, Borat, Pursuit of Happyness, South Park, Family Guy that you could put on there.

As for music, try some Michael Buble, no matter what your first impressions. Just get some random stuff, you have 80gb to fill

Joe Budden - Mood Muzik 3, Lupe Fiasco - The Cool, Fresh Prince, Billy Madison, The Goonies

hot damn, this thing is cool.
i just plugged it in, clicked 'i agree' and it's doing all the work.
ripping an old cd on there right now.
i'm most curious about being able to download tv shows and watch them on the bus.

so can you buy these shows from itunes?
can i download them from limewire?

Here's Videora.

It worked great converting video for the PSP, so I'm sure it's great for the Nano, too.

It's free. You can convert whatever video you want and control the size and quality.

No need for the iTunes store.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (MyNetsForLife @ Dec 29 2007, 12:36 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>I'm guessing you could torrent them, and then convert them. Never tried it though.</div>

You could use torrents (slow and unreliable, but invaluable) or P2P (dangerous!).

I use a great newsgroup search engine that's much faster and easier (but costs a little money).

Basically, you can get whatever you want if you look hard enough.

You could, but the best way I've found to get these shows/movies is through torrents.

Download torrents (just search for "(movie/tv title) torrent") and get something like Azureus.

i've downloaded a bunch of crap and i'm still not sure what the hell i'm doing.
i filled out a CC app last night, so maybe i can wait 2-3 weeks for vid's.
i've got about 100 old songs that i previously burned and as ghoti pointed out i ripped a few CD's.

Max i hope you don't mind but i wanted to try merging a thread and figured we could combine ours to create a super iPod thread!

i checked the itunes store and the shows they had where really crappy.

Hypothetically speaking of course, but how easy is it to either check out DVD's from the library or rent them from blockbuster and get them onto an ipod

Quite a lot are copy protected now, but I'm sure a good google search can get rid of that, hypothetically speaking. Then it's just a case of ripping it, which isn't hard. Then converting it, which is again easy. Then put it on the ipod. Hypothetically speaking, still

DVDs from the library is a wonderful thing. The one near me just started getting a ton of tv series in.

Download a Youtube ripper that converts Youtube videos to MP4 Ipod playable Videos. I have about 4gb's of Arsenal, Family, scrubs etc on my Ipod all thanks to Youtube:D Alo my Youtube ripper can take videos from my Computer so all my Downloaded Videos from Limewire are now on my Ipod.

Also shookem I don't mind about the Ipod Merge and i agree about whoever said that Itunes have Crappy Shows. The only half decent one is That 70's show.
