I mean I count them at 42.4 in salaries for next year not including a lottery pick, so add another 1.8 and call it 44 million. That is with a roster of

Aldridge
Lillard
Batum
Matthews
Leonard
Freeland
Claver
Barton
Lottery pick

If Portland strikes out on a player they really want this summer, why couldn't they simply deal Hickson for someone like Iggy? Then fill out the roster accordingly, take the next step into the playoffs with the 7-8 seed and then have another go at FA with max money again?

2014 list of FA is a little bit sexier than the 2013 class. Plus we would have another asset in Iggy to S&T if we so chose to do that

I'm not against that one bit MM. It would also give us a better idea of what the team truly needs too. Lillard is a rookie, Stotts is in his first year, who knows how Leonard will do with another year and we get a guaranteed first rounder.

43.3 MIL if we don't bring back Maynor, and Hickson. (won't bother mentioning the other guys who expire as well because they have no chance of coming back imo - even Babbitt)

That doesn't take into account our draft pick however. So if adding your 1.8 then that puts us at 45.1 MIL.

Of course this is filling out the team with minimum salary players and probably not making the playoffs again.

Cap is expected to be?

Aren't you of the opinion that a one and done playoffs is the worst senario. Why not just not spend money, tank, get a draft pick and a max player two years from now? (Serious question)

I added the draft pick in

Cap is expected to be 60mm

Why would you bring back Maynor or Hickson as anything more than a luxury? Neither are worth anything long term to this team

Olshey said Sunday that without a doubt we will be spending our money this year. He also said that he has really had to fight Paul in keeping him patient and that his job security is pretty shaky without 50 wins.

I am absolutely of that opinion.

As for tanking, I am always against it. I would never want the team to lose on purpose. I just think when you really have little hope in making the playoffs, why not start playing young guys. If they win, great

Your original number is where we differ. What site did you get your salary info from? It isn't that big of a deal though. Only of .9 MIL vs each other.

And I didn't factor them in. I said without them. I disagree that you can make the playoffs with your plan however.

That makes no sense. Olshey was hired because of his plan, which was to rebuild the proper way. If Olshey said that he was either lying or someone didn't hear him correctly

He has said in other interviews that PA was on board with the rebuild

Why not wait until 2015? We will only have 19 million! We can max 3 players! :P

Better yet

Wow. I'd like to read/see this. Link please?

Also, even if you don't have guys signed don't you have cap holds for 13 players at average salaries? So what I mean is if you only have 8 guys signed through next year, you would have cap holds of 5 imaginary guys since those positions have to be filled anyways.

Not imaginary. Guys on 1 year deals

I mean before they are signed. You have cap holds. In this scenario it doesn't matter much because you aren't trying to spend all your money on a stud but that is why they put those in. So you couldn't cut a bunch of minimum guys then sign a big stud with your free money and then sign all the little guys back.

2014 is the year but LA and (IIRC) NY both will have cap room making it hard on small markets.

I think you still make a run at RFA this summer - Pekovic and Evans.

Pekovic would be the worst fit. I wonder what people see in him to think he'd be a good center for us?

I'm all for being patient and postponing their move until next summer. I know that probably means another year of sucking, with a long-shot shot at the playoffs, but if there's nothing worth going after now, then they'd be sort of foolish to tie themselves to to a lot of guaranteed money on parts that don't fit together or get them where they want to go.

Jefferson would be fine

Howard would be fine

Bynum would be fine

Really just Pekovic

Jefferson I don't mind depending on price. The next two have no chance either due to money or injury history. Pekovic is a waste of time when they match imo.

I was simply referring to playing style when talking about Howard and Bynum . It would have to be a really good deal for me to be happy with signing Bynum, and that won't happen because some team will overpay to get him

As long as his knee doesn't need MF surgery I'd totally support Neil going after Bynum.

If/when healthy, Bynum was 1b with 1a Howard as the best center in the League. He's also only 3 years older than Lillard.

No link, but Jfizzleraider was with me at the season ticketholder meeting Sunday before the game when Olshey spoke. Said first priority was starting center then spending whatever is left for bench help. If JJ was the best option then he would be back. Was pretty clear waiting was not an option and he likes our current 1-4.

Also he joked that he wished as many GM's had asked.him about JJ as season ticket holders did.

I'm not. Healthy, young, talented players don't last forever. We've got a nice confluence of starters at 1-4, and a lack of a 5 and a bench is killing us. Another season and one of the 1-4 may have an injury, off-court problem, whatever. So then you are trying to plug 3 holes (bench, 5 and new problem). Besides, we're most flexible now while we have Lillard on his rookie deal. Once we have to pay him market value (and we have to renew Batum/LMA/Wes) things will get a lot tighter.

Sounds like Houston are making Bynum their priority this summer.

I feel bad for Philly. They gave up two great prospects and Bynum could easily bolt this summer.

Thanks for the info. repped.

I said postpone for a summer if the free agent and trade market dry up, not postpone indefinitely.
