Third-seeded 2009 runner-up Jelena Jankovic was an easy second-round winner, while 12th-seeded defending champion Maria Sharapova was sent packing in the opening round at the $2 million Toray Pan Pacific Open.

Long-time Japanese crowd favorite Kimiko Date Krumm, just one day shy of her 40th birthday, stunned the former world No. 1 Sharapova 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 on the hardcourts at Ariake Colosseum. Date Krumm advanced in 2 hours, 9 minutes, as Sharapova piled up 11 double faults and had her big serve broken five times.

The three-time Grand Slam event champion Sharapova bested Jankovic in last year's marquee finale here and also captured this tournament back in 2005. Tokyo also plays host to the Japan Open, which the Russian star has also captured twice.

The wild card Date Krumm captured this Pan Pacific tournament 15 years ago, in 1995.

Meanwhile, Jankovic moved into the third round with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko, and sixth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska joined the Serbian star in the round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-3 pasting of Belarusian Olga Govortsova on Day 2.
