The historic Cape Meares Lighthouse was damaged over the weekend by someone who fired shots at the light, breaking windows and damaging its lens.

According to OSP Sergeant Todd Hoodenpyl, an unknown vehicle reportedly drove down a blocked maintenance road to the Cape Meares Lighthouse viewing area ten miles west of Tillamook at some time between the afternoon of January 9 and noon on January 10, 2010
Police said several rounds were fired at the lighthouse, breaking 15 windows and several pieces of a historic Fresnel lens. Additional rounds were fired into an active Coast Guard light and surrounding equipment. While driving off the maintenance road, the suspect vehicle caused significant damage to a grassy area. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department estimated damage to be over $50,000 dollars.

The lighthouse lenses were very old, with much historical value and were irreplaceable, according to Cape Lookout State Park Manager Pete Marvin
A reward of up to $1,000 has been offered by The Friends of Cape Meares Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible in this case.

Cape Meares Lighthouse went into service January 1890. The lighthouse lens was manufactured in Paris, France and shipped around Cape Horn up to Oregon, arriving for installation prior to the date the lighthouse went into service.

Anyone with information to help in the OSP investigation is asked to call the OSP Northern Command Center dispatch at 800-452-7888.

Yes I do have something to say. Those guys that did that are lower than whale shit in the bottom of the ocean. That glass came from France around the Cape. Not exactly like batting a ball through the neighbor's window.

my dad works at a lighthouse in point arena california they have fresnel lenses too 666 of them and they are floating in mercury.
 
Fuckin' assholes. What the fuck did they gain from this? If caught, I'm all for a public flogging - and of course restitution of the full $50,000. Garnish their wages for eternity if they can't pay for their stupid, thoughtless actions.

Better take away rattle cans and rocks too.... not to mention cars and alcohol, because I'm sure they both played a large role.

Most likely drunk bored idiots. For kids on the coast... there just isn't the same entertainment options as in Portland.

If the assholes are caught (they probably won't be able to resist bragging about their daring deeds), they very well may have to sell their cars to pay resitituion for the damage they did. I certainly hope so.

Well, if they are caught they will no doubt have plenty of new activities to occupy their time - picking up litter, working minimum wage jobs to pay fines/restitution, etc.
