Politics Joe Arpaio Will Run For A U.S. Senate Seat, Pledging Support For Trump

I had to Google it. Arpaio sounded kinda native American to me. My gramma was married to a native American and all I remember is they called him Grampa joe. He was my aunts father.

86 is a little young and it seems his name is Italian from the quick search I did. Would have been awesome if it was him.

What an idiot. I thought for sure Trump would put him & Roy Moore on the Supreme Court when someone dies. Maybe he does not want to wait.

Term ain't over yet.
Though I'd put about the same money on Arpaio surviving long enough to hear a Supreme Court case as I would on Scalia hearing another case.

I don't know if I ever asked you this, crandc (and open to the crowd, while hijacking the thread anyway)...did you think Hillary (if elected) would've placed Obama in the Gorsuch spot?

Placing Obama in the supreme court would make no sense. He's not even a judge

He may agree with you, but the question has been asked before:
After noting how the next president will nominate "at least three" Supreme Court justices and that she isn't happy with the current Supreme Court, Clinton went back to the voter's question. ("Would you nominate President Obama for the Supreme Court?")
"I would certainly take that under advisement," Clinton said. "I mean, he is brilliant and he can set forth an argument and he was a law professor. He has got all the credentials."
One problem: Could he get past the Senate?
Supreme Court justices must be confirmed by the United States Senate, a body that has been under Republican control for the past year.
"We do have to get a Democratic Senate to get him confirmed," Clinton told the voter.
Obama as a Supreme Court justice is not a new concept, and one president, William Howard Taft, did serve on the high court following his presidency, as chief justice.
Journalists and columnists have written about the topic before, and CNN contributor Jeffrey Toobin asked Obama about it in a The New Yorker interview in 2014.
"When I got out of law school, I chose not to clerk," he said. "Partly because I was an older student, but partly because I don't think I have the temperament to sit in a chamber and write opinions."
He added, "I love the law, intellectually. I love nutting out these problems, wrestling with these arguments. I love teaching. I miss the classroom and engaging with students. But I think being a justice is a little bit too monastic for me. Particularly after having spent six years and what will be eight years in this bubble, I think I need to get outside a little bit more."

Quite a few Supreme Court justices were not judges.

https://www.answers.com/Q/What_US_S..._judges_prior_to_being_appointed_to_the_Court

A total of 41 justices (10 Chief Justices and 31 Associate Justices) of the 112 seated (36.6%) had no judicial experience before joining the US Supreme Court.

The following list includes only US Supreme Court justices who were NEVER judges prior to being nominated to the US Supreme Court. The occupation listed is the last position held before nomination.

Please note that most justices held other, often multiple, positions in politics earlier in their careers. Many of the justices whose occupation at nomination is listed as "lawyer" had temporarily returned to private practice because the opposing party was in office and there were no government opportunities available to them until the administration changed.

Whether the messenger is a racist or not, the message is valid, and one that every other country in the world adheres to pertaining to immigrants, if they allow immigrants at all.

It is a fact that Mexico is a filthy, disease-ridden, hygiene-ignorant country, and that illegal aliens bring a myriad of dangerous communicable diseases which infect Real Americans.

Before migrant workers replaced happy, hard-working American children in our agricultural system, salmonella and e coli were practically unheard of here. Aids was brought to America by Haitians....

I feel like the last few MARIS61 posts got lost on their way to the "Racist Republican Party" thread.

The 2nd part of your sentence is a goddamn lie (I don't have to get a health exam to go to Europe do I?) and I will be GLAD when your dinosaurlike ideology experiences their same fate.

If you wanted to go to Canada without a passport, you'd be locked up at the border.
I think the point you're missing due to the messenger (both Arpaio and Maris) is that if you wanted to bring a dog or a rosebush into CA, you would need a health exam for it or it would be confiscated and burned. They have checkpoints at basically every major entrance to the state. You might say there's a "wall" of checkpoints set up to stop people from bringing in plants and pets. But since it's illegal immigrants who are being discussed, there seems to be a dichotomy. Does CA care about diseases that affect the population, or not?
The importation or smuggling into California of live plants and plant product, or unapproved, uninspected, or uncertified wild or domesticated animals, whether as pets or livestock, will have serious legal and financial consequences for the persons involved. These activities are prohibited as they could result in potentially damaging impacts to California's agriculture and environment.
Certain species of animals, plants, insects and other organisms, including microorganisms, are not allowed into California. For those that are allowed, an import permit and/or health certificate or phytosanitary certificate may be required to legally enter into the state of California.
I've had apples and cherries taken away from me at the I-5 checkpoint. Never have traveled with a pet, though, so YMMV.

Please talk about humans man... I've been to Canada MANY times. Of course I need a passport. I don't get my ass checked though. :dunno:

OK, I'll stick to humans, but I was bringing up the point that CA doesn't let fucking cherries into the state, but doesn't care about illegal immigrants.
I've been strip-searched in Charles de Gaulle, with a passport. And checked with every CBRN detection device at their disposal. To come back into the US you have to declare whether or not you've been on a farm or near livestock, because you're subject to medical questions and potentially an exam. If you have (and don't disclose) you're subject to confinement. And it's not just us.
You can't sail a ship into the most ports (I know for the Bahamas and in West Africa) without a detailed declaration of health.
I had to get a visa to go to Ghana. I had to show shot charts to get the visa.
Australia -- full medical exam and proof of insurance required.
New Zealand - exam and chest x-ray.
And it's not just the racist white Christian devils doing it. Feel like going to Hajj?
In accordance with the International Health Regulations 2005, all travelers arriving from countries or areas at risk of yellow fever must present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate showing that the person was vaccinated at least 10 days and at most 10 years before arrival at the border...Visitors from all countries: Visitors arriving for the purpose of Umrah or pilgrimage (Hajj) or for seasonal work are required to submit a certificate of vaccination with the quadrivalent (ACYW135) vaccine against meningitis issued no more than 3 years and no less than 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia.
And if you're coming from Africa, they straight up just administer it to you preventatively.
in addition to the above stated requirements, ciprofloxacin tablets (500 mg) chemoprophylaxis will be administered at port of entry to lower the rate of carriers.

Forget that Arpaio was the one that said it. The point that law-abiding citizens and law-abiding visitors and law-abiding immigrants "get their ass checked", and that CA confiscates cherries and checks out pets, but we collectively turn a blind eye when "Illegal immigration" is at the heart of it is not logical. In fact, turning a blind eye toward illegal immigration causes a lot of problems for the immigrant. There are tons of anecdotes (many of which I've brought up before). In West Seattle Somali women and their families were being shoved 10 at a time into an unheated attic and charged over $1k (and I shudder to think about physical and sexual abuse) with no ability for help b/c their captors are holding their deportation over their head. Instead of showing them how to apply for asylum, or immigration status, or whatever.

Edit: Links keep deleting. I'll edit them after this posts.

Excellent point BfromWA! I just went through that I5 check point yesterday. The thought about checking me for Oranges
but not giving a shit about the people on the real boarder did occur to me. It is mind boggling stupid.
Geez, I don't know how we got here!!!

So we're actually talking about giving immigrants socialized medicine?!?
