...Cespedes is a good pickup, but I think Boston is wrongly assuming they can easily resign Lester in the off season. But they've already low balled him once...once he hits the open market, I don't think he returns to Boston.

That is a bit of a surprise, that Beane guy is one slick dude.

...Oakland is obviously going all-in for this year...no way the A's sign Lester as a FA...plus, they're now minus a huge bat by trading Cespedes.

...now they're saying Lester AND Gomes AND cash to Oakland for Cespedes..

Too bad that slug Gomes went in that deal, got a chance at another ring. Hammel hasn't quite worked out so I'd guess he goes to the pen. Saw Josh Reddick in an interview stating that Oakland had no big names on their team well guess what Josh. That big name rental may put your team over. No I don't see Lester returning to Boston either

If they resign him or not, getting Cespedes is a great deal for Red Sox I feel. The only way I see the A's making this deal is if they have a commitment from Lester. Otherwise this is to high a price to pay for a rental of 2 months regardless of what happens in the post season.

Lester will impact the A's in a more favorable manner this year than Cespedes will impact Boston. I don't think Lester will return to Boston but if he did you'd have to give Cherington an A for the day. As Yankee Fans we should be more concerned with what Cashman is or most likely what he is not doing. Hart & Rosenthal were singing Cashmans' praises over the Headley and McCarthy acquisitions. Hows old Brian going to fix up the team for the pending AL East and Detroit series coming.

...don't disagree about Cespedes, but if you think about it, he's only a ONE year rental himself.

...and I guarantee you that if you ask A's fans, they'd trade Cespedes for a WS title in a minute.

Beane's built a helluva pitching staff, but Cespedes was to steep a price to pay, IMO.

I doubt Beane will be able to pay Lester going forward, a 3 month lease, for auctioning off their best player, who they would of had for another year. The A's can't get past Detroit, and will direly miss Cespedes bat, and arm, which is a highlight film of its own.

Beane's not going to get past Detroit with pitching only, his team can't hit the Tigers pitching staff....so far anyway....

...I think that Beane realized he would not be able to extend Cespedes' contract past next year when it expires.

...not sure Boston will either. If he does really well next year in Boston his FA price tag will go through the roof. At this point, the Sox have traded away one of the best LHers in the game in return for a solid bat. But can anyone tell me who is going going to anchor the Sox's pitching staff next year?...Peavy, Lackey, and Lester are all gone...who's their ace, Buchholz?

Yeah rentals all the way around. It'll be interesting to see when they decide to call home during the off-season.

Exactly!

...like I pointed out, I'm sure the A's and their fans, who have not won a WS in 40 years, will trade one more year of Cespedes for a WS ring.

...the Sox are getting a "ONE year rental" in Cespedes. The Sox don't have a "commitment" from Cespedes either. And what good is one year of Cespedes when they no longer have a pitching staff?

It's a year more than Lester had left... A year and a half...

... I'll ask again, "And what good is one year of Cespedes when they no longer have a pitching staff?"

Very, very good valid points you make in all previous threads 59....the Sox utterly decimated the SP staff, for Cespedes. I don't think the A's can get by the Halos or Tigers even with Lester, & Gomes, just IMO.....

I honestly did not think, and your right, Beane would NOT of been able to sign Cespedes, just like the many others they had to let go, Tejeda, Giambi, et al. Yet, if no Series, no Lester left, no Cespedes left.....

only Gomes temper tantrums...touche-!

Billy Beane might lose his job over this one.

...why?...just because the rest of the A's offense went into hiding?...offensively, as far as LFers go, Cespedes is not that great. Hell, many of Gardner's offensive numbers are better and as far as Lester, he has pitched very is every start since joining the A's.

Lester's gone 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA since joining the A's & has nothing to do with the A's bats going silent since the trade.

I don't necessarily believe in the "one guy" concept but there is a coincidence that sine he left the A's hitting went south. Lester pitched well losing critical games to LA & Seattle Aces due to lack of run support. Hammel has had but one good game since coming over with Shark holding his own. Might be that the old song "If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It could apply to the 2014 As. They were flying high till trade time.

...and IMO, that's all it is, a coincidence.

...Cespedes' line with the A's before the trade; .256 .303 .464 .767 ...not exactly impressive, especially for a corner OFer.

...LF production by A's for the whole year;........258 .333 .460 .792

I'm hoping come 2015 that Lester is wearing Yankee pinstripes. If the price is right.

I'd be willing to bet that Cespedes wishes he were still in Oakland truth be told, and yeah you can quote his stats but what I see in that guy is swagger, saw that here in Tampa against the Rays. If the A's fail to reach the playoffs can we say choke. Speaking of pitchers another one that got his a@@ handed to him was Garza. Should have kept his mouth shut about pitching ones self out of Chicago. Maybe the Brewers will be exiting the playoffs as well. Both the Oaks & Brews held first for a long time, problem is first place only counts when you have less games to play than your lead, or on the last day of the season.

...yeah, I think he'd rather still be in Oakland...wouldn't you be?...lol

... And IMO, the A's offense will come around soon enough. I just don't think Cespedes is the reason the rest of the offense went into a slump because the A's early season ability to score a lot of runs was no indicative of their true offense any more than how poor it has been for the last month...I think it's somewhere in between. But like they say, you can never have too much pitching and the additions of Lester and Samardzija made an already good staff, even better ...especially in a short 5 and/or 7 game PS series.

From a ball players perspective yeah maybe better Oakland. However on a John Q Citizen level I've been to Oakland and it ranked right up there with the worst places I've seen, a real crap hole and in light of information Ive seen presented it hasn't changed much.

...oh yeah, I meant playing in Oakland...and you're right, from what I've read, it's not some place you'd want to live.
