Some of you know I'm a numbers guy and got another one of those curiosity twitches that caused me to go find the answers. As a result, y'all get that answers as well.

My random question was "I wonder how our current Blazer team stacks up percentage-wise against the all-time stat?"

Points:

• The Blazers have scored 424,676 points in their existence
• The members of the current roster have scored 31,506 Blazer points for 7.4% of the total Blazer points

Rebounds:

• The Blazers have had 179,676 rebounds in their existence
• The members of the current roster account for 7,988 of those rebounds for 4.4% of the total

Assists:

• The Blazers have had 95,529 assists in their existence
• The members of the current roster account for 6,710 of those assists for 7.0% of the total

Steals:

• The Blazers have had 31,196 steals in their existence
• The members of the current roster account for 1,499 of those steals for 4.8% of the total

Blocks:

• The Blazers have had 19,044 blocks in their existence
• The members of the current roster account for 869 of those blocks for 4.6% of the total

3 Pointers:

• The Blazers have made 16,769 3 pointers in their existence
• The members of the current roster account for 3,397 of those 3 pointers for 20.3% of the total

Yah, forgot a decimal place on the blocks.

On the 3 pointers, helps when #1 & #2 are on the current roster with Dame ~800 ahead of CJ and CJ ~200 ahead of #3 Wes Matthews.

Dame accounts for about half the current roster assists.

The ranks are clearly skewed toward scoring (points, assists, 3-pt'ers) and away from the traditional "Hustle Board" categories (rebounds, blocks, steals) the Drexler era teams were known for. Other than 3's, the two halves are surprisingly tightly grouped.

Just did that at the end of December. My goal for this season is to do an update at the end of each month (or if they play on the last day of the month, at the start of the next month).

Interesting post. I wonder how many games played our current roster has relative to the total. I bet it's around 5%.

This all mostly reflects the importance of three point shooting and the increased scoring league-wide.

Only somewhat related, I've always wondered what Steve Nash or John Stockton's careers would've been like if they'd put up 11 threes a game like McCollum. Especially Nash. I remember whenever we played him how relieved I felt when he didn't shoot.

There must be a lot of ex-NBA guards who look back and wonder how many thousands of points they left on the table just because their coaches didn't tell them shoot threes more.

Due to the makeup of the team, the stats are largely skewed to reflect Dame & CJ as they have the longest tenure on the team.

Any of our new or relatively new players have little impact on the overall stats. If you were to take Dame & CJ out of the equation you'd have something more along the lines of:
1.7% of the total points
2.1% of the total rebounds
1.1% of the total assists
1.5% of the total steals
2.6% of the total blocks
3.1% of the total 3 pointers

that's not surprising in a guard oriented offense that has had 2 starting guards that have spent 5 years of very durable basketball

besides that, 9 year starter Dame has about 61% of those assists. If Whiteside had been a 9 year starter at C, the current Blazers' rebounding and block numbers would be much higher

I'll expand that to include Portland's rank in total assists/game in the Dame era starting in the 2012-13 season (+2nd, 3rd leading assist man)

2012-13....18th (Batum)
2013-14....9th (Batum + Mo Williams)
2014-15....12th (Batum + Steve Blake)
2015-16....21st (CJ + Plumlee)
2016-17....23rd (CJ + Turner + partial season of Plumlee)
2017-18....30th (CJ + Turner)
2018-19....25th (Turner + Nurk + CJ)
2019-20....30th (CJ)
2020-21....25th (CJ)

pretty clear that Dame posted the lion's share of assists. And when the Blazers had Batum and an actual competent backup PG they were in the top-10 or close to it. But when they went to the heavy-iso back court of Dame/CJ, Portland's assist/game ranking started to crater. Plumlee helped keep the Blazers toward the high end of the bottom 3rd. But after he left and it became primarily Dame/CJ Portland assists just dropped to the bottom.

I'd think we might be at about the ceiling of the Dame/CJ team ranking around 25th, but it could go either way.
