May 17 (Reuters) - An explosive eruption rocked Hawaii's Kilaueau volcano on Thursday sending an ash plume thousands of feet into the air, according to tweets from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The powerful, steam-driven blast was expected to spew large amounts of volcanic ash and smoke from Kilauea's crater on Hawaii's Big Island. The eruption has destroyed 37 homes and other structures in a small southeast area of the island and forced around 2,000 people to evacuate their homes.

shit just got real...Pele is making some serious noise

It erupted today 30,00o ft into the air.....this isn't a few lava vents...it's like someone dropped a nuke...my heart goes out to the folks of the Big Island....2000 people's lives have been destroyed pretty much...if you have friends, relatives visiting the island...they'd be smart to leave now

Is this a different one than the one that has been in the news the past two weeks?

In regards to the people there, it sucks, but they do know they live on a GOD DAMN VOLCANO right? I think people accept where they live and the consequences. Tornados in the midwest, hurricanes on the east coast, earthquakes and volcanos for us. Don't fuck with Mother Nature, that bitch is undefeated!

DAMMIT ALICE!

I have a friend that lives there. She and her husband have not left as far as I know. Hope she and her family are safe.

Is it still going?

...hope they packed gas masks! White plumes of acid and extremely fine shards of glass billowed into the sky over the island of Hawaii today as molten rock from the Kilauea volcano poured into the ocean.

Dunno they said it is like 200 miles away

Just thought I’d let you know that I’m still alive. Been on the Big Island a week and a half and the volcano hasn’t gotten me yet. I’m on the west side of the island and other than some vog you wouldn’t know anything was out of the ordinary. Beach time!

bad move by your folks...the vog is worse in Kona than most places...should have flown into Hilo and gone up the eastern coast...stay away from the west and the south..

The island is 93 miles across at it's largest dimension.

barfo
the road around the island...is about 300 miles round trip....the road takes one break going south to Pahoa and that's a short hiway
