ORLANDO’S DWIGHT HOWARD AND PORTLAND’S LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE NAMED
NBA EASTERN AND WESTERN CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

NEW YORK, Jan. 24, 2010 – The Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard and the Portland Trail Blazers’ LaMarcus Aldridge today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Jan. 17 through Jan. 23.

Howard led Orlando to 3-1 record on the week, averaging 26 points to go along with 13.3 rebounds (tied for third in the league and second in the East) and 1.3 blocks. He recorded three games with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, giving him 20-10 in 23 games on the season. On Jan. 21, vs. Toronto, he scored 31 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in just three quarters of play, including 17 points and seven rebounds in the third quarter.

Aldridge ranked fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 28.3 points to go along with 10.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. His efforts helped the Trail Blazers go 4-0 to extend their season-high winning streak to five games. On Jan. 27, he scored a career-high 37 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 113-102 win over the Timberwolves. Aldridge became the first Trail Blazer to score at least 25 points and grab 10 rebounds in five straight games.

Here is a recap of the week for Howard and Aldridge:

Augustin, Denver’s Carmelo Anthony, Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin, and New Orleans’ David West.

Sweet -- he totally deserves it. I was a bit concerned that Griffin would get it because he had better numbers.

I think it's great. Besides Brandon, I wonder who the last Blazer was to get it.

this makes the hick green bay team being in the superbowl less disgusting.

I thought I saw on one of your telecasts last year that Sheed was the last player to win the award before Brandon.

I'm glad he won, but shocked Griffin didn't win. He had way better numbers.

Well done, LA. Let's put an exclamation point on it tonight.

Then why is it called player of the week?

And it's not like the Clippers have sucked in that time they only lost once (to us)

31.5
14.5

vs

28.3
10.3

Not only was it the record, but LA totally dismantled Griffin in a head to head matchup. The stats don't say the whole story.

From the article in OP.

On Jan. 27, he scored a career-high 37 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 113-102 win over the Timberwolves.

That seems odd, since this is the 24th.

But, anyway, GO LA!

Go Blazers

This has gotta be a big help in getting the coach's to vote him in the All Star game!

Because LaMarcus was the more effective player between the two, especially in their head-to-head matchup.

If so, that's ridiculous. I'm happy that Aldridge won, but it's not Griffin's fault that he's on a lousy team. If you put Griffin on the Blazers, and Aldridge on the Clippers, Griffin would have won.

Huh? Griffin had 18 rebounds to Aldridge's 8. He also had more assists and more steals. Aldridge had 28 points to Griffin's 20, but that's certainly not a "dismantling."

I think that if LMA hadn't dominated Griffin in a head-to-head game on national TV in the same week, Griffin would have won. I don't think we need to worry too much about Griffin though, I suspect he's going to win plenty of these awards in his career.

Did you get to watch the game? Griffin couldn't do squat against Aldridge's defense. He got a lot of rebounds and some put-back points, but it was clear that Aldridge was the more experienced and dominant player that night.

If Griffin had outplayed Aldridge head-to-head on 1/20, then perhaps the Clips are 4-0 for the week and Griffin wins the award. As it is, he couldn't, they aren't, and he didn't.

Neener. (to him, not you)

Griffin shot 6-17. Aldridge shot 13-20. One guy helped his team A LOT on both ends of the floor; that guy's team won. Seems pretty simple to me.

Green bay has passed the pats, jets on being arrogant and classless. It's just like the ducks vs auburn.... Sec/afc are just better and tougher football then the pac10/NFC . Packers and that punk overrated Rodgers will get theirs. I'm sure Joe buck calling the game will make packer fans creme themselves. He's the most bias announcer I've ever heard when he does national packing-.

Interesting. I thought the LA Player of the Week would be restricted to Clippers or Lakers?

If you put Griffin on the Blazers, and Aldridge on the Clippers, the Clippers would have gone 4-0 and Aldridge still would have won Player of the Week.

Aldridge is on a lousy team too. We're only not completely lousy because of him.

Shooter, the stats don't tell the whole story. I watched the game and Aldridge destroyed him.

Would that one loss be the game where LaMarcus made Griffin look bad. Is that the game you are talking about?

Sorry Mix--I agree with you on hating the Packers and that the NFC is generally inferior to the AFC, but to call the Packers arrogant and classless and Rodgers a punk seems baseless. I haven't seen anything from them that justifies that.

In fact, I'm faced with a dilemma for this year's Super Bowl. As a Vikings fan, I can't root for the Packers. But if any QB deserves to have his team rooted against, it's Roethlisberger, whereas Rodgers is the definition of class. What do I do? I think the best I could hope for would be for Clay Matthews to injure Big Ben with a cheap shot in the first quarter, knocking him out of the game and getting himself ejected, and then have Dixon come in and lead the Steelers to victory. But seriously, what are the chances of that?

Wrong. Watch the game (or more carefully).

Griffin was allowed to travel on his "moves". Griffin was allowed to go over the back at will, helping his rebounding. Griffin got sent to the line more than a rookie should be gifted.

And yet, Aldridge dominated that game. I don't care about the stats. All you had to do was look at the body language of Griffin and the Clipper coach. They were upset at their inability to get good looks for Griffin and the inability to stop Aldridge when it mattered. That's dominated.

I'll never get used to him being called "LA".... I was waiting to see who on the Lakers got player of the week.
