Well worth the read. I had no idea that he had such a difficult upbringing.
http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindducksbeat/2010/12/lamichael_james_oregons_heisma.htmlEUGENE -- LaMichael James had just been knocked around for three hours, his head was foggy, his forehead cut, his vision blurred and his leg still sore.
"I'm tired," the nation's leading rusher said after Oregon beat Arizona in another hard-fought but lopsided win. "I'm going home."
Although he was talking about returning to his apartment, that hasn't always been the case. James' path to New York for Saturday's presentation of the Heisman Trophy and to Arizona next month as the Ducks play for the national title has not been easy, because for all his power and speed, the 21-year-old is still figuring out when to fight and when to run.
He has done plenty of running. The redshirt sophomore is already Oregon's second-leading career rusher with 3,228 yards. In 2010, he leads the nation in rushing (152.9 yards) and scoring average (12.0 points). And Thursday, he won the Doak Walker Award, presented to the nation's top running back.
Should the No. 2 Ducks (12-0) beat top-ranked Auburn in the BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 10, James will be the first player in 34 years -- and the fourth player in NCAA history -- to lead the nation in rushing and win a national title. (Notre Dame's Creighton Miller in 1943, USC's O.J. Simpson in 1967 and Pittsburgh's Tony Dorsett in 1976 were the others.)
