This guy sounds ignorant. Is he saying that we have no right to place any limitations on firearms?

Edit - He confirmed his ignorance. The AR15 was used by the military in the Vietnam war. I trained on one before going to Vietnam.

The rifles being used in all these mass murders are similar to an AR15 but they are not AR15s. And why is that? Because they are not sold with the automatic feature. The AR15s used in combat, mostly by the USAF, had a selector switch which allowed for either single shot or automatic fire.

Surely someone else in here served in that war who knows the difference.

I've spent the last 15 minutes searching info on this gun. 10 different articles saying 10 different things. I'll try and repeat the things I'm relatively sure about.

1. AR meant ArmaLite Rifle not assault rifle.

2. ArmaLite had trouble selling them to the military and sold the gun to Colt.

3. Colt sold them to the military and they were renamed M16

4. Colt sold semi auto versions to police and civilians named AR 15 (so you saying they aren't AR15s is wrong)

5. There are many different companies making variations of this same gun with different names.

The important thing is that the guy in the video may have been off on some gun facts but he is 100 percent correct in his overall opinion, that law abiding citizens are the only ones who will follow the law.

For clarification, these guns are AR15s the same way later 442 Oldsmobiles are still 442s even though they don't stand for 4bbl, 4speed and dual exhaust. It is a name.

Just before I went to Vietnam I was sent to a place near where I was stationed at Ft. Monmouth, N.J. where I was sent to a room where each of about a couple dozen or so were each given a rifle they called the AR15 to tear down and reassemble. They told us it was the precursor to the M16 and was currently used by the USAF. It had a selector switch for single shot or auto. Looked identical to the M16 which we all had to qualify on during live fire.

As a side note, when I got to Vietnam, I was supposed to go to Pleiku where I could have any weapon I wanted but I wound up in Da Nang where I was issued an M14, same as the Marines used. Never used an M16 in combat.

This is one of the things I'd read. There were quite a few articles that didn't mention this. Most of them glossed over the small window of time you mention.

My point was that with such a wide array of articles that say different things it would be easy for someone who didn't experience it first hand to be wrong.

Dude in the video is right in the larger sense in my opinion.

They did sell tons of guns called AR15 that were semi auto.

The Cruz kid's gun was called a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 .223 according to an article I just read. It is "ar15 style" supposedly.

Lanny, I appreciate your service!
I was in the first draft lottery in 69 my number ended up being 359. The lottery was implemented the summer of 69 and my birthday was Aug.
I had many friends that went and I was always supportive and still are of our troops. I have a son in the Oregon National Guard who's about to go full time as career. He's a sergeant (Sarg) but they pronounce it differently now Sarent.
Again thanks for your service my friend!

He's not ignorant. Yes, he was incorrect about the AR-15, but his main point is 100% correct.

All of this talk about regulating guns will only affect law abiding citizens, because only law abiding citizens will follow the law. So you throw out his entire argument because he had a little bit of information wrong about the AR-15? If that were the case, virtually every single anti-gun person I have met would have their entire argument nullified because they don't know shit about guns and they think the AR-15 is a fully automatic.

I didn't really want to know much about them and after trying I'm glad I didn't earlier.

Some articles claimed the guns were awesome killing machines. Then when I read about the military they weren't so great. There's too much differing opinion on the internet presented as fact.

So the video can basically be summed up with the cliché "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns"?

Why can't it be both?

If it works for you, I would guess that tells us something.
But to me a cliché is but a trite remark. Hardly compatible or even complementry to the truth. Especially when you consider, this truth if it became a reality would become a horrible fact.

Thank you. I never get tired of hearing that. They're very good at saying that at the VA hospital and it means a lot to me. I often hear it from other Vets, even combat Vets.

I didn't want to go, but I'm gland I did. I've always loved our country and our flag.

My father, who, along with every other male member of my family, both sides, has served in the Army except my little brother who was a Marine. Anyhow, my dad told me that if I didn't get drafted, he was going to take me aside and teach the manual of arms. Well, he didn't have to 'cause the Army did it for him.

I thank you as well. I do a lot of work on USAA insured vehicles with Veteran plates. I always fix anything I can when working on them. Example, fix a quarter panel and the door that is painted for a blend panel...... I'll fix any dents that are within the blend area even though insurance won't cover it.

It isn't a huge thing but most of the men in my family until my generation were military. My grandfather did something in WW2 although he NEVER talked about it and didn't even like seeing it on tv. Could have been a cook or mechanic or Rambo, don't know

Oh yeah, NV veterans plates are pretty obvious so I don't even honk at them in traffic.

Well, pirates generally don't compromise.

But, I wasn't suggesting repeal as a compromise, more as my starting position. Mar's starting position is leave it as is. Somewhere in between those two positions is a compromise. I'm offering him the chance to give me something of real value; otherwise I'll board him and make him walk the plank off his own ship.

barfo

Why can't it be both?

I see @SlyPokerDog liked your cliché analogy instead of seeing the truth.

Let me see if I can help you see how much truth there is in only the bad guys having guns and how that might not work as well as everyone would like.

MarAzul will be coming to Portland sometime mid summer. Probably park right down town for a while and then up the River, on to West Linn.
@barfo has already indicated the desire to board the MarAzul for non friendly purposes, perhaps there are others that would like to join in. Perhaps @Lanny even has a freind that would like to lend a hand.

But as it stands right now, I seriously doubt, you or Sly or anyone else would take on the job of giving Barfo a hand in the game. On first thought, none of you have any idea whether you would run into great difficulty in the endever? But then you consider the possiblity of that ancient Mariner being armed! Just the possibility is enough to take the fun out of the game, squeches even the even the thought. Where as, if only the bad guys have arms, what harm could come of just having a little fun?

Ha! See what perfect gentelmen it makes of everyone! Just the threat is enough to modify behavior and that is a fact. Why some might even stop by such as @UncleCliffy'sDaddy, and come aboard for a brew, after asking, Permissions to come aboard of course. Hell proper order in the world makes it a pleasant place for all.

Again, I like lots of posts I don't agree with.

If that's reason shoot me then bring it on!

Why in the world would I do that to my old friend? You'd never give me the reason.:cool2:

But is doesn't keep you from failing to recognizing, Truth from Trite.

I agree that law abiding citizens will be affected the most . . . at first. It's gonna take some time for shrinkage to take effect and the most dangerous weapons to slowly disappear. I suspect that after some time it will gradually get better and better.
