Long Island high school football player dies after collision during game

A high school football player on Long Island died Wednesday night after suffering a severe head injury during a varsity game.

Tom Cutinella, a guard/linebacker for the Shoreham-Wading River High School Wildcats, collided with an opponent from John Glenn High School and collapsed on the field about 6 p.m., Suffolk County police said.

The high school junior, 16, was taken off the field in an ambulance and rushed to Huntington Hospital where he underwent surgery, Newsday reported.
