Have had my PS2 since 1999. Son is old enough now for us to move up to the "new' one. Anybody have any ideas where I should go. Don't mind if it's used, as long as it works. I also don't really understand the difference between the 80 or 120gig. We would only use it for playing games so how would the size of gigs effect me. Thanks.
 
Just buy the $300 PS3 Slim! price doesn't really change that much.

If you want to hunt and don't mind buying used, Craigslist often has some deals. I see a PS3 in Beaverton for $250 right now... http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/vgm/1682580858.html

It's true that HD space is not super crucial, but it does start to fill up as you play games. One seldom-mentioned flaw of the PS3's Blu-Ray drive is that it's significantly slower than a DVD drive. To get around this, many games will copy crucial information over to the HD for faster access. In addition, there is a ton of downloadable content out there. Between Rock Band songs, installations, and assorted game downloads, my 80 GB drive is just about full. The good news is that the HD itself is just a standard drive, and can be upgraded yourself should you choose to.

Thanks man. We wouldn't be downloading anything, we don't get into it that serious. I was wondering are our old PS2 games gonna work on the PS3? I heard they wouldn't, but I just saw one on ebay that said they do. So the ones that have less gigs are obviously cheaper, but there is no other difference?
 
And are there any differences between the "slim" and the regular one other then size?
 
If I were you, I would buy a new one. If you buy a used one and it's defective or something fucks up, you're screwed. New one, you have warranty and it'll be legit. I have a PS3...all I gotta say, screw Xbox.
 
Yeah, Sony discontinued the model that played PS2 games a long time ago -- you'll have to really scrounge around if you want to find one. Apparently the additional chip necessary to be backwards compatible made the manufacturing process just too expensive. I keep my old PS2 hooked up to another TV downstairs for when I get the urge to play some Katamari... Of course, I'm not playing either one much since my own son was born in January... =) Can't wait until he's old enough to beat his old man at video games...

There are some minor differences between slim and fat, but nothing huge. Both play all of the games just fine. The biggest gripe I hear about the older fat models is that the shiny case smudges easily. (shrug)

P.S. And no, I don't think there are any other differences between the large and small HD versions. Might as well go small.

The size doesn't really matter, if you need space just delete it. You can download all sorts of things like demos of new games, ps1 games, even games like bejeweled and crap. I have a 60 gig and I've never had any problems with memory, I just delete old crap I know I'll never use again.
 
Do not buy a backward compatible PS3. Those are the oldest models and they have been dropping like flies lately. They call it the "yellow blinking light of death." I had a 60 GB system die on me, got a refurb, and I sold it to a friend who wanted the backwards compatibility. It just died a month ago.

The best thing to do is just buy a new 120GB slim. They use less power, produce less heat, and you'll have the warranty. It's the best way to go.

Backwards compatibility isn't important. Just keep your PS2 hooked up if your kid wants to play old games. When your PS3 collection is big enough, those old games will collect dust anyways.

Thanks. I just hate the fact that I have all these PS2 games and they won't work. I'm the kinda guy that would rather just toss the old stuff and move on.
