I love what Marcus has brought to our team, but with all this contract talk about next season I can't help but think of Theo. Remember how he brought it the last 25 games of the season after we traded for him(albeit, not as strong as Camby)? Then we thru all that cash at him and NEVER played anywhere like that again while in a Blazer uni! I hope we re-sign Marcus this summer, I just want us to tread lightly!

Damn......... do I bring it, or do I bring it!!?!?!? One minute I can talk about having a threesome with your mom and sister in a hot tub then the next I tossin' around hoop knowledge like CP3 throwin' dimes!

No. Camby is way more dynamic than Theo ever was. When did you ever see Ratliff put up 30 points in a game?

Geez, "THE", way to be a downer.

I was against the Theo signing. I'm very much for signing Camby. He is way better than Theo.

Theo was playing other worldy, and iirc, was known for being soft.

Still can't believe they signed him to that extension. That was mind numbingly stupid.

Camby's game isn't predicated on his explosive hops like Theo's defense was.

Still, I think you don't want to get into a crazy bidding war on a guy his age if some of these teams with cap space really like him.

I remember the Theo Ratliff chant.

Theo was great with the weakside help D. Thats just about it for the positives. Couldn't shoot that top of the key jumper like Camby. Was a poor man defender. Couldn't board on either end. He had also shown himself to be extremely injury prone.

there are a lot of holes in that comparison

Theo did not have a history of consistently putting up numbers. He was very up and down. Camby is consistent. Plus we were a lot more reliant on Ratliff back then, whereas we have Oden coming back now.

Which brings up the issue: who starts if we re-sign Camby? I say Camby, at least for a while.

Not me. Theo was a block machine, nobody could get a shot over him in the paint, virtually no one.

"Soft" he may be, but his presence in the middle was a game changer, you simply couldn't take it to the basket with him in the lane. The extension to me was mind numbingly easy. Cheap veteran, immediate impact in every game = well worth it.

Good comparison "The"

Theo was a "one-trick poney" as one poster would always say. Camby has a more well rounded game and a proven history.

Nonetheless I do think we need to be very cautious with a contract offer, especially with guaranteed money beyond 2 years. I'd rather see us spend $11mil a year for two years than $8mil a year for four. When NBA players performance drops off it is a very sharp drop very quickly.

Yowza @ $11M ...he's only making $7.6M this year... Courtside last night was guessing $8M, I think they are probably a little low for a shorter term deal...but nowhere near the $11M ballpark...

THANK YOU!

SCREW YOU!!!

My worry is that Camby will be a lot worse next year because of age and post-contract relaxation. I'm for signing him, but I don't want us to break the bank for him with these risk factors involved.

Theo was also a cancer in the locker room. Camby seems to be the kind of veteran leader, especially on defense, that this team sorely lacked.

I've worried about the 'contract year' syndrome possibly being at play with Camby, but I think the big difference between Camby and Theo is that Camby has always been a pro and a pretty good locker room guy (by all accounts).

There's a risk, but to me I think this is a risk worth taking ... especially for a guy who seems to have been so instrumental in taking an actual leadership role with this team.

Hmmm ... it's something to think about I guess.

I would put Camby in the same boat as Miller. Solid veteran who still has a couple years left. Miller was in a contract year and we rewarded him with a pretty decent contract last summer... how has that worked out for us? I think Camby really wants to win.

Exactly. Miller has always been a 'talk is cheap, all-ball' kind of player and the same goes for MC, who just plays smart and with a lot of passion for the game ... I don't think I've seen a Blazer get so many floor burns in so short of time since Ruben Patterson, and on the plus side this Blazer isn't a nanny raper and a drunk.

But who are we to judge? ;)

It's a valid comparison. Both are older, stringy centers with long lists of injuries. The big difference to me is that even if Camby breaks down and can't continue to rebound or defend like he does now, he'll always have that screwy but effective perimeter shot, and he'll always have a decent passing game. That's enough to still be a decent backup center in this league. (Arvydas proved that.) When Ratliff lost his hops, he was done.

oh I have a couple great "Kobe Stopper" drinking stories!

I had that very discussion on another board. I fell for The Rattler hook, line and sinker. When he retired after signing that deal I felt like I had been played for a fool. I've seen the selfish Camby before (here in Denver) and I hope he doesn't return if we re-sign him.

You bring up good points.

There is NO WAY Camby plays as well as he has the last month for the bulk of an entire season, let alone two or three years, during the term of a new contract. He has a history of getting banged up. He is too old to assume he will continue at this level without dropping off. The team will have to be careful.

I am happy we have him now. I don't want to worry about the off-season just yet.

Probably not, but if they can manage his minutes and keep him on the court around 30 per game he should be able to remain fairly productive in Nate's half-court, snails pace offense.

Camby has more heart and hustle in his pinky toe than Theo did in his whole body. Camby would never mail it in after a contract. Him and Juwan are special players... they truly care.

Theo did look AWESOME his contract year. He almost broke the franchise record for blocks in 1/2 season!

But he truly did look like he stropped caring after he got his new contract. I don't think Camby is that type of person.
