Mardy Fish says every now and then he goes off his strict diet to sip red wine and eat cheese pizza with no other toppings because "they get in the way."
Nothing got in Fish’s way on a sweltering, then rainy Tuesday afternoon at the Sony Ericsson Open, as the late-blooming American toppled 6-foot-6 Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in two riveting sets, 7-5, 7-6 (5) to advance to his first quarterfinal berth in his 10th attempt in Miami.
Like the fine wine he craves, Fish, 29, is getting better with age.
