Defensive Player of the Year
1. Ron Artest(notes)
Most would agree that since his final year in Indiana, Ron has sometimes hurt his teams defensively. He either obsesses over defending his own man at the expense of help D, or he gets into petty "no layup" battles that cost his teams free throws and Ron's ego absolutely nothing.
This year? He's been perfect. Shutting down small forwards while helping a Lakers defense that has been ranked among the top one or two teams for most of the year. Los Angeles is a whopping 13.6 points per 100 possessions better defensively when Ron is on the court.

2. Anderson Varejao(notes)
It's not just flops and flashy rebounds with this guy. Varejao moves his feet expertly, and the Cavaliers are a much better team when he's on the floor.

3. Martell Webster(notes)
An all-around stopper on a middling defensive team, Webster is a beast on that end.

A defensive beast?

He's been solid but a beast? we're just going to have to agree to disagree.

Good to see he's getting some attention for his energy and hustle. More than he deserves, but still good. If Greg or Joel were healthy, they may have put one of them there instead.

Our Martell? There's no one else in the NBA named Martell is there..

Glad I wasn't the only person surprised when I saw that article.

He has Tim Duncan as his #2 MVP candidate. So take that for what it's worth. Martell has been very good on defense, kudos to him for really stepping up in that department, but I still like Batum's D better to this point.

It is my opinion that almost everyone here really underrates Martell's defense.

Martell is our best perimeter defender and has easily put the most effort in on the defensive end this year for our team..But it is more effort and athleticism than anything. Batum is much better than him on defense. I love Martell and I'm impressed with how he has come back from his injury but I can't say he is one of the best in the NBA.

It is my opinion that almost everyone here really underrates Martell's defense.

There are 6 players on Portland's roster with a better Defensive Ratings than Webster's this year, and an additional one with the same rating.

There are 3 players on the roster with a higher defensive win score (but this can be misleading - because the playing time is different and DWS is an accumulative statistic).

If we look at DWS / MP - there are 8 players on the roster with a better DWS per minute than Webster.

Honestly, I appreciate the enthusiasm Webster plays defense with, and it should be noted that he is often matched against the other team's best defensive player, if only because Batum is not around - but he is not the best defensive player on this team by any measure.
