Claimed by Nationals and they let him go. They will save 4.5 million by doing this. No idea who replaces him.

Nationals Acquire Matt Thornton From Yankees

1:54pm: The Nationals have in fact acquired Thornton after placing a claim, reports Heyman. It’s not yet clear whether or what the Nationals will send in return other than taking on salary, says Heyman.

1:44pm: The Nationals have claimed Matt Thornton off revocable waivers from the Yankees, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports on Twitter. Washington was awarded its claim on Thornton, which indicates that no American League clubs and all National League clubs with a worse record passed on the opportunity. MLB: New York Yankees at Oakland Athletics

This means that the Nationals have 48.5 hours from the point that the claim was awarded (which remains unclear) to work out a deal. If a trade cannot be arranged, the Yankees will have to decide whether to allow the Nationals to take on Thornton’s contract without compensation. (Having placed the claim, the Nats would be obliged to accept it.)

Thornton has been excellent this year, pitching to a 2.55 ERA with 7.3 K/9 against 2.2 BB/9 over 24 2/3 innings. He signed a two-year, $7MM deal over the offseason, under which he is promised a $3.5MM annual salary in each season. The Nationals have been said to be looking hard to add a southpaw pen piece, though it would be somewhat of a surprise if the Yankees moved a player who has been a fairly valuable contributor.

I got a feeling the Yanx know something about Thornton they are not speaking of, some secret, strained arm????.....eg, Cliff Lee....?

So, looks like Rich Hill coming up. Very exciting I know. Heyman among others say Yankees working to use Thornton's money towards someone else but are not saying who or what?
 
"I don't see how this benefits the Yankees to trade this guy unless Lindgren is being moved from AA to the majors. If I were the Yankees I'd just hold on to him since he's being paid pennies and he's pitched well as of late."

another articles words not mine, I won't say yeah or nay on this claim...either way....I'm remaining hush, til this all pans out.....!
 
Mattingly, they obviously were not impressed with him and thought it was better to save money rather than keep him. They could have just pulled him back.
 
My gut or female intuition is telling me they are working thecw a I've wire for another starter. I have no idea just a hunch.

I kinda get the same gut feeling....but I'm not a female, (obviously) gotta' respect that "female intuition"....the stories I could tell of my Wife's Intuition....

Ok, here's just one. I went into a Diabetic Coma not but 2 months after I had taken a job in Georgia. I had no clue I was even Diabetic. Spent a week in the hospital, had high enough blood sugar 983, the doc's said I should of died. Had doc's driving 30 minutes south from Macon, to see with their own eyes, a man still alive and not a vegetable, all day long all week long.

I get out of the Hospital, my 1st day back to work, I always left to get to work an hour early. I took a detour stopped by a Waffle House, had a Pecan Waffle, Yep......
It was delish by the way.

I no sooner get to my Office, set my coffee thermos on my desk, (before I even sat down), the phone rings at 5am. its my wife, ..... 1st words out of here mouth...."so how was that Pecan Waffle"......uh uh uh....my reply: "what did you follow me or something"? "Nope, I just know, females intuition"

My Hats off to Female Intuition :tiphat:
 
The Yankees are currently carrying more pitchers (13) then position players (12) Which leaves only 3 bench players. Who the hell does that?

Right on. Look he was allowing inherited runners to score recently, I think that you will see Lindgren soon if not for sure by September. Could it be possible that we could have such a strong pen next year with Robertson, Bet, Lindgren, allowing Warren to possible return to starting.

...but yeah, I read that the Yanx are hoping to bring up Lindgren and maybe another youngster...Clarkin maybe?
