Mavs G Wes Matthews participated in contact drills for the first time in training camp and said he feels good and remains optimistic he'll be ready for opening night.
“Matthews went through the majority of the contact work today, so he was a go today for contact. And he did extremely well, which is a great sign,” Carlisle said.
He added: “You know, when he’s involved in the live parts of practice, you see how he’s going to fit in with the team. He played well. He’s very good defensively, he hits open shots, he’s going to be a leader on our team, and he brings a toughness and a grit. He’s going to help us in many ways.”
“It felt good. It felt really good,” Matthews said after going through the majority of the Mavs’ Monday practice. “You know, I need that. I’ve been accelerating at a good rate and the rate that I thought I would be. And it was good to get out there with the guys and compete, get hit, take hits and keep moving. You know, it was a good first showing, and I’m excited for the next one.”
“I mean, obviously, I’m limited a little bit. I mean, this is the first time I’ve played actual basketball in over six months, so obviously I’m not me yet. But that will come,” Matthews confessed. “That will come quickly. The thing I was most concerned about was the defense, which is what makes me good on both ends of the court. Offense is going to come — the timing, the rhythm and all that. I’m not worried about that. That’s easy. It’s the instincts that I have on the defensive end to make plays and reads, and I felt it there.
“This isn’t the step right now. The step is the next morning and how my body responds. I’m fully confident that it’s going to respond like it always has, bounce right back and be ready to go again. You know, I wasn’t worried about this. I knew that I could do this. But it’s still a great feeling to be able to do it.”
