I orginally posted this under the May Angelou thread but perhaps it deserves a thread.

The idea that she should be required read sort of prompted the thought.
There is very little that should be required reading for every person. We all have different strengths and interests. For most of us, it pays far better dividends if we maximize the strenght we have and leave the weaknesses to be covered by our partners, companions or teammates.

What say you? What are your strengths?

Are you arguing against a "well-rounded" education?

I've led quite a fun, satisfying, and downright exciting at times life by taking pretty much the opposite approach.

My strengths have always been there for me to fall back on, or to get me in the door somewhere new, but nothing bores me more than a goal I know I can attain. I've deliberately jumped occupations and career fields to face new challenges, multiply my strengths, and meet new people. I've even switched my occupation and career field simply to pick up skills and training I needed for a different occupation and career field.

Most, not all, occupations can be mastered within 2 years simply through on the job training. After that, you could do it with your eyes closed.

Strengths are a given, like knowing you can beat up your little sister. Weaknesses are a challenge and a learning opportunity.

Learning a new subject doesn't mean you are employing a different strength. Changing jobs doesn't mean you are using different strengths. Affinity with the process of "Learning" is a specifically identified strength. You see it listed number two in my list above.

Perhaps reading the book is in order before you close the issue with a contrary judgement.
