What do you guys think?

Hitler and Osama, two of the biggest American opponents in history, both announced dead on May 1st (if what i'm hearing around the web is correct).

May 1st seems like a nice holiday. Patriot day? American day? seems like it could be cool.

Obviously this day is a huge day in American history.

some would just decry it as another example of the military-industrial complex getting accolades

In many countries, May Day is synonymous with International Workers' Day, or Labour Day, a day of political demonstrations and celebrations organised by communists, anarchists, socialists, unionists, and other activist groups. May Day is also a traditional holiday in many cultures.

Used to be big in the USSR.

A day to celebrate the death of two people (Hitler, Bin Laden)? Seems like it just makes their name more (in)famous, and misses the point.

Yeah because Hitler and Osama's death has nothing to do with any other country in the world. Fuck off.

The Illuminati (plural of Latin illuminatus, "enlightened") is a name given to several groups, both historical and modern, and both real and fictitious. Historically, the name refers specifically to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment-era secret society founded on May 1, 1776.

Not a great idea, it would just glorify them more I think. But then yes we do have a reason to celebrate because these people are dead, it is a tricky one.

Y U NO THINK?!

How would suggesting an American holiday offend the rest of the world? It isn't like we claim the day and noone else can use it.

And Osama's death was by far, more important for the U.S. than for others.

It doesn't offend but your post does.

How? al-Qaeda bombed London too; just because it wasn't as severe doesn't mean it wasn't as big of a deal.

I heard that the attack on the towers was also the biggest terrorist attack against British people.

You are offended by my post?

Well rest assured, I had no intention of offending anyone.

If you're butt-hurt over it, you should propose that you have a similar holiday for your country instead of saying we shouldn't have one.

I never really understood how Americans came to accept that the current holiday schedule is the best. Would our GDP really plummet much if we had 5-10 more federal holidays per year? And wouldn't it kind of be worth it?

That said, it's kind of depressing to declare holidays over the death of people who've never spent a day of their lives in our country. I'd prefer we just do what England does and intersperse some "bank holidays" throughout the year--holidays with no real official meaning other than, "hey, it's kind of nice not to work today."

I also find the 40 hour work week kind of silly. So many people I know do actual work for about 25 hours/week, then fuck around on the internet for the rest. Why not just be honest about it and kill off some of that office time.

How about we just call it Obama's Coronation Day?

I actually think we have too many holidays.

For those people, self-employment seem like a good idea. Their bosses should also look to downsize if what you describe is true.

What would be the benefit to our overall quality of life if we did away with, say, the 4th of July and New Years Day holidays? (Or others--feel free to pick.)

I think work is an important part of life. If it were me, I'd dump MLK Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day. Keep New Year's, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

memorial day and labor day are great. beginning and end of summers.

I think family and personal growth is an important part of life.

I think work is a necessary part of life.
