A cold, damp Northern California day gave the second round of the United States Open Friday an entirely different personality than the first, with winter hats among the wiser wardrobe choices only a day after Pebble Beach Golf Links was bathed in beautiful sunshine. So it was perfectly fitting that a man from Northern Ireland made himself at home.

Graeme McDowell broke from a pack of golfers to take a two-shot lead with his three-under 68, which included six birdies to offset three bogeys, the only golfer among the morning starters to make any headway. Most competitors were stuck in a cycle of birdies and bogeys, every step forward seemingly matched by a step or two back. After 17 holes, McDowell had a three-shot lead on the field, but even he fell victim to Pebble Beach’s maddening greens. On No. 9, his final hole, he hit the green in two, but his first putt was so long and had such a huge break, McDowell putted it clear off the green. He settled for a finishing bogey.
