Former GOP gubernatorial hopeful Meg Whitman has changed course on California's ban on same-sex marriage, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8 as unconstitutional.

Whitman, who supported Proposition 8 and vowed to defend the voter-approved law against legal challenges during her 2010 gubernatorial bid, is one of dozens high-profile Republicans who signed a legal brief supporting gay marriage that will be submitted this week, according to The New York Times.

The Hewlett-Packard chief executive issued a statement through her LinkedIn page saying that she has come "to embrace same-sex marriage after a period of careful review and reflection."

"As a candidate for governor three years ago, I supported Proposition 8. At the time, I believed the people of California had weighed in on this question and that overturning the will of the people was the wrong approach," she wrote. "The facts and arguments presented during the legal process since then have had a profound impact on my thinking."

She wrote in the statement that the brief she signed argues there is "no legitimate, fact-based reason for providing different legal treatment of committed relationships between same-sex couples." Allowing same-sex marriage to stand in California, she wrote, will "strengthen our nation as a whole."

"Marriage is the fundamental institution that unites a society. It is the single greatest contributor to the well-being of adults and children because it promotes eternal principles like commitment, fidelity and stability," Whitman wrote. "It makes no difference whether the marriage is between a man and woman or a woman and woman. Marriage makes society better."

Whitman has largely stayed out of California political limelight since losing to Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, though she was a major supporter and adviser to Republican Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.

The court is scheduled to hear oral arguments on Proposition 8 next month.

Good for her, I wonder what is the real reason for her change of heart though? Im guessing she has a close family member or friend who's gay.......... Or maybe she is just vote chasing.

She's CEO of HP. I don't expect she'd go back into politics.

My guess is that she's doing the right thing because she realizes it's the right thing. :)

Or maybe she hooked up with a chick and enjoyed herself. It also isn't lost on me there will be an 'oral' argument on the matter. How apropos!

Ah...political pandering at it's finest.

You know, I'm glad of support from all walks of life for equal rights. And there are a few Republicans, particulary younger ones like Meghan McCain, who always stood for equality. But I still am bugged ... many of these politicians ran for office explicitly demonizing gays and marriage equality to get votes. They supported putting bigot initiatives on ballots to ramp up antigay turnout, figuring it would translate into votes for them. They said nothing when their party embraced the most extreme statements and policies, comparing marriage equality to bestiality and saying LGBT folks were worse than terrorists. And now that they are out of office they are our friends? It's possible they all had changes of heart, but my cynical side says quite a few were hypocrites, endorsing positions they did not hold to get in office, where they continued supporting those positions that now all of a sudden they oppose? If it was just one person I could say change of heart, great, mas tarde que nunca. But 75?

It's shocking that a politician will tell voters what they want to hear. It's called pandering for votes.

It's interesting that values voters won elections for Republicans. Now values voters win elections for Democrats.

Prop 8 was a ballot initiative. It passed 52.25-47.75%. It's common sense to pander to the 52.25%.

Unfortunately for her, the electorate doesn't vote (as a whole) on the one issue.

Just a female Romney, another completely worthless and despicably dis-honest puppet with no value-system of her own, flip-flopping for votes.

Hey, quit stealing my thunder. That's what I just said.

Maybe people ought to thank her for her support.

...for those that don't approve of Gay Marriage and want a "Biblical" definition of marriage, enjoy this handy Bible Marriage Guide! [Good news for rapists! You can marry a virgin if you rape her and then pay her father!] Still think the Bible is good reason for making modern laws and denying people Civil Rights?

I'll take door #2.

Obama is considered a hero for gay rights.

Yet, what exactly has he done for gay marriage other than say his position had evolved? Has he enacted any legislation to legalize it at the federal level? Have the Democrats voted to legalize it?

I am all for gay marriage, and I'm one of those evil conservatives on this board. The best marriage I know of is between my uncle and his husband, and they went to Canada to get married before they finally got divorced after 23 years last summer.

Sheeple...

He just asked the Supreme Court to throw out Prop 8.

Not sure who considers Obama a hero for gay rights. Not sure what gay activist PapaG talked to. If I were a betting woman I'd bet none.

Obama came late to the table. But he was still the first president of the United States to include LGBT equality in both an Inaugural Address and a State of the Union. And he is President of the United States so whatever he says automatically carries weight. Except of course with those who still deny he is legitimately President of the United States.

Aside from the FOC brief in Prop 8, Obama decided not to defend DOMA in court on the grounds it was unconstitutional, helped push for repeal of don't ask don't tell, instructed federal departments to recognize same sex partners, and instructed the Pentagon to extend to partners all rights not prohibited under DOMA. I'd say, not enough, not a hero, but still more than any president of this country to date.

As usual, you didn't read more than one sentence of my post.

all true, but all old testament... yawn

If a Democrat had blown $141.5 million of his own money ($50 per voter) on buying a governorship, then lost as badly as anyone can, she'd be laughed out of the state. The media would make her disappear like a Gary Hart or Al Gore (who won, yet is treated as a joke). But a Republican did it, so Hewlitt Packard jumped at the opportunity to annoint her their President.

Good for her, I wonder what is the real reason for her change of heart though? Im guessing she has a close family member or friend who's gay.......... Or maybe she is just vote chasing.

Her motive is the same as the intelligence agencies which push gay marriage--to make gays settle down into sedentary conservative lives instead of being wild and free. While liberal heteros are pushing back the limitations of marriage, gays are suckering for a structured life in the suburbs.

As usual, wrong. The president doesn't enact legislation.
I don't know if marriage can be legalized nationally - honestly don't know - but I think (anyone with more legal knowledge than I have may confirm) that marriage laws are governed by states and that states have always recognized one another's marriaged. Until same sex couples began to marry. DOMA does not actually outlaw same sex marriage, it says the federal government won't recognize such marriages. Yes, Congress can repeal. Would more conservatives vote to do so?

I think Democrats could do a lot more for equality. One of many reasons I am not a Democrat. And I still don't know who called Obama a hero of the LGBT movement?

I don't see how one state can not recognize a marriage performed in another state. Or another country for that matter.

Article IV, Section 2 reads:
constitution said:
The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.

I'm so tired of this being an issue and it doesn't even directly affect me. It must be freaking maddening to those actually affected by this bigotry. The only rule should be, all parties must be of age and must consent. That's it. Gay, go for it. Mormon, go for it. Polyamorous, go for it. In love with Rush Limbaugh, go for it. None of that works for me, but whatevs. I'm not you, your not me, thank fucking &^^%$#.

May I say I agree with God even though I'm an atheist?
