The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters is an annual tennis tournament for male professional players held in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, a commune that borders on Monaco, of which Monte Carlo is the most famous ward. The event is part of the ATP Masters Series on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. The tournament is played on clay courts. It is currently held every year in the April-May period.

The Monte Carlo tennis championship was first held in 1897. It became an "Open" event in 1969.

Unlike other ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments, this tournament did not have mandatory player commitment, reflecting the changes made to the 2009 schedule by the Association of Tennis Professionals in 2007.

Djokovic, Nadal win in Monte Carlo

Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal each won in straight sets Friday and rolled into the semifinals of the $3 million Monte Carlo Rolex Masters in Monaco.

Nadal, this year's No. 2 seed, defeated Djokovic in last year's Monte Carlo final and neither has dropped a set en route to Saturday's semifinals.

Nadal on Friday defeated ninth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4, 6-2 and extended his Monte Carlo winning streak to 30 matches. He's won the event the last five times he's entered.

Verdasco upsets Djokovic, will face Nadal

Fernando Verdasco, who won the fourth ATP title of his career in San Jose in February, scored the biggest upset of the week Saturday at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters by beating the No 1 seed Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2.

No surprise as to who Verdasco will be playing in Sunday's final: Rafael Nadal did not allow a few sprinkles of rain (no volcanic dust here yet) to disrupt his march toward a sixth consecutive title as he thwarted all David Ferrer's attempts to pin him back with heavy ground strokes to beat his fellow Spaniard 6-2, 6-3.

He said he felt nervous as victory loomed. He said he thought his scores here in the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters have been "unreal." But the reality is clear: Rafael Nadal's back at his imperious best. On a glistening Sunday afternoon on the edge of the Mediterranean, he crushed Fernando Verdasco 6-0, 6-1 to create an Open era record by winning a specific tournament six successive years.

Incredibly, this was his third victory with the loss of just one game this week. No one's come close to taking a set from him -- as Novak Djokovic did in the final last year -- and it's hard to see how anyone can trouble him on clay if he continues in this vein of form.
