2. Trail Blazers send Raef LaFrentz, Sergio Rodriguez and Nicolas Batum to the Bobcats for Gerald Wallace and Sean May

Why should the Blazers do it?
This is the perfect market for a team like Portland to pick up an excellent player without giving up much in return. Rodriguez and Batum have promise, but Wallace is the real deal. He would add the kind of toughness and versatility that could put the Blazers over the top.

Why should the Bobcats do it?
They are rebuilding this team in Larry Brown's image. This deal gives them some young talent, but more importantly some cap space. Given their recent moves, they could use it.

Will it happen?
The Blazers are in an enviable position. They have what might be the best asset in the NBA right now in LaFrentz's contract.

Sources say that they have their choice of Wallace, Richard Jefferson or Caron Butler if they're willing to send a few young players and LaFrentz's contract. Wallace, Jefferson and Butler all have their strengths, but for the Blazers' needs, I think Wallace is the best fit.

YES YES, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD YES

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

Have their choice of players? Good. Then pick Butler.

I love G. Wallace, but his injuries worry me. Butler would be fantastic.

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

I'd take Caron, Wallace, Jefferson in that order.

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

I love me some Gerald Wallace, but good god if we could get Caron Butler I would do it in a heart beat

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

Yes to Wallace.

No to trading Batum.

Please trade Outlaw and/or Webster!

Btw, Caron is by far the best option of the three.

While I would be sad if we traded Batum, It wouldn't stop me from getting Butler or Wallace, not in the slightest

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

Yes trade Batum.

He's overvalued.

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

I'd make this between Butler and Wallace depending on what's being asked for by all 3 teams.

Same. Jefferson's not terrible, but a better (and younger, cheaper) version is possibly available in the off-season, in Childress.

I see Wallace and Butler as clearly better than Childress, so they're the ones I'm interested in trading for.

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

I just puked.

No way Blazers go for that. Hell to the no fucking way. They'd be stuck in lux tax hell for a LONG time.

"Luxury cap hell" has no relevance in limiting the competitiveness of the team. Portland will be over the cap either way...in terms of signing free agents, it makes no difference how far over they are.

If Allen is willing to pay the money, it makes Portland a far better team.

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

Yes trade Batum.

Agreed.

Any chance you have to turn an expiring contract like raef + Batum (an unproven commodity at this point) in exchange for a former all-star SF under the age of 29, you do it. Especially if their name is Butler or Wallace.

We essentially take all their movable bad contracts.

Yes, Allen could eat it, but I think he's trying to be more fiscally responsible this time around.

If he is, then he is. But I think he also wants to win a championship, and he's not getting any younger.

Are you sure about that? He's 19, and he's got some pretty unique skill sets.

I've seen some flashes from him that were scary good. I have a feeling he can be an All Star type player. A lot of people have compared him to Pippen.

On the other hand, he's probably 3 years away from approaching that type of level.

Sure, but two of them (including the biggest) are only two seasons, so one more after this one. It's not terribly long-term badness. Songalia is the longest, and he'd be 15th man for two seasons after this one.

No idea whether that's true or not. Doing this would be a financial hit, but would essentially turn Outlaw and Webster into a stud small forward, part of the core. That sort of upgrade wouldn't be possible otherwise without giving up a fair amount of talent.

So, it all depends on Allen's willingness to spend a lot. It wouldn't hurt the team at all, just help.

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

Batum's is the teams future SF imo. He'll be able to guard the other teams best guard on a nightly basis so Roy won't have to, and a damn good job he'll do.

I also don't see him as being a player that will need a lot of touches which is fine since the Blazers have Roy, Aldridge and Oden, and I think he just fits in perfectly. He's just a little too raw at this point.

Considering how much he's already improved from SL to the regular season, he's worth keeping and seeing how much he improves going into next year.

Don't start falling in love with our young talent....

If you have a chance an semi-young all-star caliber player, go for it.

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

Batum is already a good defender. He's going to be a great defensive player. He's not Telfair, Sergio, Khryapa, where they showed flashes but otherwise did nothing well.

Btw, if those players are truly on the table I really don't see how KP could choose any other player over Butler. I said it earlier this year that Butler would be our Pau Gasol. He'd give us a legit 2nd option right off the bat.

TBH, he's gotten burned on defense quite a few times this seasons, and not necessarily by good players either.

Yes he's a good defensive player......when compared to everyone else on the team.

Wallace is a great defender, and also provides offense.

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

I would be fine with giving up Batum, or Rudy for that matter, to get either Wallace or Butler, but I really don't want to give up Bayless. If I had my druthers, Roy, LMA, Oden and Bayless would remain Blazers.

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

According to the Mikes Charlotte wants Webster badly. I'd much rather trade Webster than Batum. I challange anyone to name one player other than Batum that as a 19 year old rookie on a playoff team was asked to defend the opposing teams best player every game? One player.

How long ago did the Mikes say this?

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

I'd prefer Butler than Wallace but it depends on what each team wants. If Char wanted Webster, that would be too tough to pass on.
I would give up Rudy for Butler but not for Wallace..man please get one of these 2!!!!!

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

If we can get Butler you have to get him. He is a straight-up citizen, can make the last-second shots, is among the best theifs in the league, and makes his free throws to boot. Not the best 3-point shooter, but a little better than G.Wallace.

However, realize that Butler has had some injury history in the past as well. In fact, he's averaged 60 games a year for the past two seasons. Wallace is a better shot blocker, gets less points, but at least is improving his FT% significantly it would appear. I would be very happy with either of them, and I do think that G.Wallace is more likely. Butler is more like Roy in that he can create his own shot (so there is some redundancy) whereas Wallace has shown the ability to slide over and play the PF position effectively and thus there is some versatility in the lineup that wouldn't exist with Butler.

I am against trading Bayless and Batum, and watching Oden and Webster (not to mention both of their cheap contracts...especially Webster's) make me reluctant to trade them. But in order to get the big guns you have to do it sometimes. If we can make this work using a combination of Sergio/Frye/Diogu/RLEC/Outlaw/Webster, then you had to do you. You'd think that some combination of those players, even if it's RLEC+Outlaw+Webster can get it done. Given Rudy and Batum's play, we should be confident with their abilities to man the position. Trading away Webster is harmless because we've played all year without him...it's like trading away another Ghost contract with regards to how the rotation will work.

Like I said, I'm all down for either of them. Up until now I probably would have said I would choose Caron, but looking at their injury history and relatively similar numbers from the 3-point line, I have to wonder if Wallace would end up being a better fit given what we would have to give up to get him. I just don't like many of the other players on Charlotte that we'd have to take back in order for the salaries to match up right.

But we should try to keep Bayless and Batum, who despite sliding on draft day, were project as top-5 picks at one time or another.

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

At least it's encouraging to hear day by day that Caron is more and more available when as soon as last week, it seemed like he was untouchable. Please bring on Caron!!

Re: Five deals that should happen at the trade deadline!

I've read several articles now suggesting that Caron might be moved to keep Washington out of the luxury tax, since Arenas and Jamison aren't going anywhere due to inflated contracts. That's the similar situation to how Gasol got moved last year. I would have thought he was untouchable, but maybe not due to financial reasons.

Getting him or Wallace would be a coup. Wallace is probably a bit better on defense, Butler is certainly better on offense, both are young with good contracts. Bring it baby.
