We've just learned Michael Jackson was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Los Angeles ... and we're told it was cardiac arrest and that paramedics
administered CPR in the ambulance.

He was picked up at his home around 20 minutes ago -- we're told his mother is on the way to visit him.

UPDATE: The 911 call came in at 12:21PM at his Holmby Hills home in L.A.

UPDATE: A Jackson family member
tells TMZ Michael is in "really bad shape" and the brothers are headed to UCLA.

UPDATE: We just got off the phone with Joe Jackson, Michael's dad, who says "he is not doing well."

Michael Jackson was one of the greatest entertainers of his time. I don't care who you are, if the J5 or the album "Off The Wall" doesn't put a smile on your face, then you aren't human. It's been sad to see what he's become.

I hope he makes it through this, and the experience allows him to reevaluate the strange bubble world in which he's existed since the mid-80s.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Pop star Michael Jackson has been rushed to a Los Angeles-area hospital by fire department paramedics who found him not breathing when they arrived at the singer's home, the Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday.

The newspaper said paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene before taking him to the UCLA Medical Center hospital.

No further details were immediately available, and spokespersons for Jackson could not be reached for comment.

Jackson, 50, is due to start a series of comeback concerts in London on July 13 running until March 2010. The singer, whose hits include "Thriller" and "Billy Jean," has been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the past two months.

The shows for the 50 London concerts sold out within hours of going on sale in March.

Jackson, who started out as a child star in the band "The Jackson 5" more than 40 years ago, has lived as a virtual recluse since his acquittal in 2005 on charges of child molestation.

There have been concerns about Jackson's health in recent years but the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson had passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors.

CNN still has him as unresuscitated, but I'm having doubts.

Absolutely agreed.

What a shame his death is. Such a dichotomy his life was...a star of the type that may never come along again (I can't think of any entertainer since that has completely dominated the mainstream pop scene like MJ did in the '80s) and yet a (seemingly) very sad, alienated life.

In the end, I think I probably feel sorry for him despite all the fame and money.
