Only 1 10-day contract by someone would do the trick...

Until now, Portland Trail Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard had a secret it appears most of the NBA hadn’t taken the time to discover for itself: Darius Miles is on the brink of blowing up the Blazers’ salary-cap space.

Most of the NBA believed Miles was still eight regular-season games away from devastating the Blazers salary cap, but Yahoo! Sports learned on Wednesday that Miles is just two games away.

Teams had been under the impression that the Collective Bargaining Agreement demanded that Miles play 10 regular or postseason games for the $18 million – which is split evenly between this and next season – to return to the Blazers’ payroll. Apparently, no team had called the league for clarification on the rule that states the season is constituted by the “first day of training camp and ending immediately after the last game of the NBA Finals.”

The league office confirmed to Yahoo! Sports that the six preseason games that Miles played for the Boston Celtics counts toward the 10. Before the Memphis Grizzlies waived him on Tuesday night to avoid guaranteeing his contract for the rest of the season, Miles played two regular-season games that pushed him to eight total.

Any team in the NBA can simply sign Miles to a 10-day contract, play him twice and punch out one of the summer’s top free-agent destinations. The Blazers are a prime destination for free agents, and the cap space also made them a fierce competitor for sign-and-trade deals. If Miles returns to the salary cap, he also will push Portland into the luxury tax. That means every team under the tax would benefit with about $250,000 of revenue sharing from Portland.

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

How is he only 2 games out? Suspension games count or something? He has to step foot on the court, and as far as I know, he has only done that 2 times. Do they count pre season?

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

“Someone is going to scoop him up and play him those two games now,” one Eastern Conference executive said when told the news on Wednesday night. “Portland is screwed.” One West GM thinks the Denver Nuggets, who moved under the luxury-tax threshold on Wednesday, will be motivated to sign Miles.

Wow

6 preseason games with Boston I think

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

What a bunch of horse shit.

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

fuck this. david stern better step down on this shit. an NBA APPOINTED DOCTOR RULED HE WAS MEDICALLY UNABLE TO PLAY!!!

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

At what point does this seem premeditated by the league office and they put a stop to teams just trying to hurt our salary cap? Miles is done, if he's signed again it's only to stick it to us. I'd have to think the idiot Stern might want to attempt a little ethics wouldn't you?

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

I thought he had to serve the 10 game suspension before the games counted.

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

All this does is make the inevitable that much closer.

This isn't going to do anything to KP's plans if he's really committed to being a player in free agency this summer, it just changes strategy a bit.

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

yup he had to serve the 10 game suspendation first i am smell horse mule and elephant dung on this article.

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

why don't we sign him? lol

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

The Blazers should demand a NBA doctor evaluate Darius before he can sign another contract with any team! If he's lame, signing him will be mute except to screw us, thus is should not be allowed!

:sigh::sigh:

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

Clearly being cut by the Celtics and the Grizzle must say to the league office he's not much of a player anymore. We also know that no team will keep him longer than a month. How could this be allowed?

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

I would imagine the Blazers signing him would throw out the 10 game thing, and eliminate the capspace immediately, since they are the team trying to get the medical excemption.

You could always sign Darius Miles to be an assistant coach though.

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

What a bunch of crap. Preseason games don't count toward anything. Ten-day contract, here it comes stupid Darius

Celtics/Grizzlies both probably wanted to help in getting him towards his 10 games, but didn't want to completely burn a bridge with Portland. They're just waiting for a team like the Nuggets, a division rival, to deal the final blow.

I'd bet Memphis would sign him for the last week of the season though if no one else does before then.

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

I'm not so sure Miles' contract would put the Blazers in the luxury tax.

get paul allen to give him a fat check under the table, and tell him to go play in euro

Good point. Can anybody confirm this? How can he get credit for games before he serves his suspension?

Read the article.

6 preseason games + 2 regular season games = 8 games.

If they were counting the games in the suspension, it'd alreadry be at 10.

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

I'm not too worried about all of this.

One, even if this is true, even IF Miles plays, and even if the amount goes back on the cap, IMO KP and Penn already have the legal stuff drawn up for the appeal of it.

Two, if the appeal doesn't go through, things have changed since September. Then, we were really glad for Miles to be off the cap b/c that allowed us flexibility to work around the Webster and Frye (and to a small extent Diogu) cap holds, ensuring we didn't have to sign them to a high extension price in October with them having all the leverage. It also allowed us to be able to keep Blake and Outlaw and still sign a max- and a mid-level-esque player.

Now, even if that 9M goes back on the books, we've already signed Webs to his extension. His 11M cap hold (iirc) will be about 4.3M, so there's almost 7M in "space savings flexibility" right there. I think we've seen that Frye and Diogu's play does not warrant 9M cap holds, so they'll either be traded or renounced. I don't think Blake or Travis is here the day after the draft, but even if not I doubt anyone in here would lose sleep if we had to trade or not pick up the options on those two b/c we were signing a max player or doing a lopsided trade and needed the space.

In September, we didn't know who our long-term SFs were, if Bayless could play, if Sergio was ever going to be anything but useless, and what we'd get out of the bench. We know now that Frye and Diogu are joining Blake and maybe Outlaw in the "not in the long-term plans" category, with perhaps Sergio joining them (though I personally don't think so, but I'll concede that that's still potentially up in the air). So I don't see this as a crushing blow, even if we lose the appeal. With Miles' 9M, we have ~42M in cap holds for the summer. (That's if we don't pick up the options on Travis and Blake). So we could sign a player for around 18M or so, depending on what the final cap number is. Not that worried.

I don't think there is any connection between the suspension and the medical un-retirement. Presumably the suspension was for 10 regular season or playoff games - preseason games excluded for obvious reasons. The medical unretirement, if that article is right, includes preseason games. Obviously he can't play if he's suspended, but that doesn't mean he has to serve the suspension before games count towards unretirement. Ah well.

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

Right now Portland has $50mil on the books for next year INCLUDING Miles' contract. That seems to be under the salary cap to me.

Frye and Diogu have qualifying offers, so they aren't guaranteed to be here next year, and at this point, I doubt they will be.

Re: Miles 2 games from counting on the cap

Look everybody just go ahead and assume that he's going back on the cap, it will lower your blood pressure and will probably mean that KP goes ahead and makes a move with RLEC before the deadline rather than trying to make a splash in free agency, so nobody will have to delay gratification.

I got that, but if the NBA says he must serve his suspension before he plays, I would think that would be another grounds for appeal if they count preseason games when he had a suspension to serve.
