Obviously should be taken with a grain of salt, since it's the Wild One, but take a listen to the mp3 linked here from the first hour of today's "Wheels at Work" show.

Rice comes on around the 16:00 mark and talks about Martell around the 22:00 mark.

Interesting. First I'd heard from anyone there was a chance Martell could come back before the playoffs.

Didn't they already come out and say he was done? I could of swore I saw that on Hoopshype only a week or so ago.

This is the official word from the press release issued by the Blazers:

Martell Webster has been cleared to begin low-impact activities (bike and pool) after X-rays reveal improvement in the stress fracture in his left foot. He will no longer be required to wear a boot. He is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the regular season.

Nothing definitive about that statement. Obviously Rice, based on what he's seen and heard, has reason to believe Martell is going to come back before the end of the season.

Then he should shut the fuck up and let those with medical degrees make the medical decisions.

Sheesh, every talking head thinks they know more about Martell's injury than the doctors who are actually treating him.

the thing about stress fractures is that they are not really that serious to begin with....its just rest and hoping you don't reinjure it.

In a metatarsal?! I can't think of a worse injury to the foot; the trouble is stress fractures in the feet aren't particularly well vascularized and without a clean break the body doesn't always trigger a good healing response ... hence we are six months removed from Martell going into the boot before coming out of it.

not true, he came out of it too early and reinjured the stress fracture I believe, which didn't completely heal.

As a professor of orthopaedic surgery at UCLA, I say Martell will be back before the season is over!

Hell yea, after last nights game it is clear how bad we need him! Especially come playoff time.

I wondered if anyone besides me would get the joke. That was pretty much, word-for-word, my same response to Yardape in the Oden injury thread a few days ago that led to a huge controversy.

That response was out of character and overly harsh. In short, I was an ass. So, when I saw this thread, I couldn't resist the chance to poke a little fun at myself.

Hey, we're not here to judge. As far as I know that kind of sniffing is still legal and who is he really hurting other than his nose hairs?

Does it really matter? It'll take him a while to get into game shape and in the flow of things. 3rd string SF in the playoffs, at best.
