Top-seeded 2004 champion Mikhail Youzhny advanced to the quarterfinals of the St. Petersburg Open, rallying to beat fellow Russian qualifier Evgeny Donskoy 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday.
In Friday's quarterfinals, Youzhny will play eighth-seeded Victor Hanescu of Romania, who advanced by beating American qualifier Rajeev Ram 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-3.
Earlier, Russian wild card Dmitry Tursunov beat fourth-seeded Yen-hsun Lu of Taiwan 6-1, 6-4 to reach his second quarterfinal of the year.
Playing only his third match on tour this season, the 260th-ranked Donskoy threatened to cause a huge upset against No. 10 Youzhny. Having taken the first set, Donskoy recovered from a break down in the second and then immediately dropped his serve again, allowing Youzhny to level the match before dominating the deciding set.
