Athletes are focusing on basketball & football now... Look at the racial breakdown by sport, he wouldn't be incorrect that fewer play baseball, but those who probably could have are focusing on other sports....
Add in that there are far more Hispanic & Asian players now than years before too... Fewer spots available per race when more races are present...

Excellent points Hammer. About a year or so ago, I saw a documentary on the declining numbers of Blacks in MLB. Quit a comprehensive Doc at that. High School Athletes were polled in numerous depths and geographical locations. Inner cities, seem to have a much higher turnout on the blacktop courts of Basketball. As many find more excitement in Football.
The numbers of Black kids today, are preferring both Basketball and Football over Baseball, that's no secret for quit some time.
The Doc ended on the advent growing populace of Pan-Am Latin Countries, from Venezuela, to the Caribbean Islands, where these kids have gone on to become 28% of the Active MLB Players. While less and less Black Kids play or even go out for Little League or High School Baseball.
No doubt the trends are shifting...
