Free-agent center Alonzo Mourning plans to sign with the New Jersey Nets, apparently paving the way for Jason Kidd to re-sign in New Jersey, a league source who spoke with Mourning's agent Thursday night told Insider's Chad Ford.

Mourning could announce as early as today that he'll sign a 4-year, $20 million contract with the Nets.

Mourning's agent told the Insider source that Mourning agreed to sign with the Nets after receiving assurances that Kidd also will re-sign.

Kidd's agent, Jeff Schwartz, didn't return a phone call Friday morning seeking comment.

Mourning, who can't officially sign until July 16th, will be in Miami tonight at Zo's Summer Groove, his charity basketball game and dinner.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban confirmed Zo's move Friday, ending the team's hopes to land Mourning as their starting center.

Mourning, 33, was diagnosed in October 2000 with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a kidney disease that can eventually require a transplant. He played in just the final 13 games for the Heat in 2000-01, but appeared in 75 games the following season.

For his career, Mourning has averaged 20.3 points and 9.80 rebounds per game, but in the last two seasons he has played, his numbers have dropped off, to 13.6 and 7.80 in his abbreviated '00-01 season and 15.7 and 8.40 in '01-02.

Last September, shortly before training camp, Mourning was advised by doctors to skip the 2002-03 season because test results indicated his condition had worsened.

He has since received medical clearance for 2003-04.

Mourning's move also ends weeks of speculation surrounding Kidd's future in New Jersey. After heavy courting from the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, Kidd will return for his third season with the Nets.

News reports swirled on Thursday that Kidd demanded that the Nets fire coach Byron Scott as a means of preventing Kidd's free-agent defection to the Spurs.

Both sides dismissed those claims, and Kidd and his wife, Journana, told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher that the request was never made during a meeting with Kidd's agent, team owners and president Rod Thorn, the Nets president.

i guess Kidd doesn't want a ring that bad. Maybe the Spurs can sign Brand this year or sign a big man for a year and wait for next season

Be best if spurs go after KG next year..or sign PJ brown or a brad miller..i didn't want kidd in San Antonio anyway....

same. i hope KG would want to go to SA. i dont see why not. they'd be unstoppable.

ya i hope kidd doesnt go to san antonio only bcuz i like tony parker...but i wouldnt mind if he was out of the Eastern conference so the raptors would have a better chance

To whomever said Brad Miller, he's staying in Indiana now that Jermaine has re-committed, which is what he was waiting for. Now, onto the Nets, they're gonna be good next year. Probably Eastern Conference Champs again. Spurs, eh, if I were Brand, don't sign with them. Wait out your last year in LA and than sign after that somewhere.

We don't even know if mourning will even be heathly..it could be another grant hill situation

god i hope this happens...i really dont want to see kidd go to san antonio, i love the nets with kidd, so fun to watch. they could trade dikembe for a decent player too, with alonzo starting and a-train and twin off the bench...theyd be a pretty solid team

wow, if alonzo stays healthy i don't think theres a doubt that they will be the EC champs again...

what about the Pistons? seemed to me like everyone thought they'd win the ECF even if Kidd stayed in the East

Kidd wants to give Nets another chance I guess. Plus he got many years left in him anyways, he obviously prefers being on his own(being a PG... Parker problem?) I'm glad this is happending, I wouldnt want too many good players on one team anyways, Lakers enough... and WOW Morning and Kidd, scary combination.

KG has issues with TD for some reason. So if he wants to go to SA he has to set apart his gripes with TD.

really? he better realize that he and timmy could win a ring year after year if they were on the same team

yea it began in the Minnesota-San Antiono playoff series a couple years ago...

So he threatens to leave if Byron Scott isnt fired then he decides to re-sign with the Nets after Mourning decided to become one. What gives?

i dont even think that threatning thing is true...but i think the nets will be better with Zo

so it looks like in this early stage of the season that it will be a lakers nets rematch in the finals....as of today

this isnt even a fully accurtae story. mouring wont help miuhc. he cant stay healthy and kidd wants to go to san antonio for hte ring

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting "allnet":</div><div class="quote_post">Don't want kidd in SA....so glad TP will still be the starting PG 8)</div>

same

i hope they can get brand...

after minnesota made the moves to get cassell on the team and showed they are committed to winning, kg will likely re-sign.

the spurs could make a move to try and get kobe next season, but they are running out of options this year and losing out on kidd and zo definately hurts them.

how come no one wants to play with duncan?

I wonder that too, hes not a ball hog, hes a good player. I have no idea, maybe they skuured of him
