Entering Monday night, only one Oregon State basketball player had ever notched a triple-double.

It was Gary Payton, the program’s most famous, who had 20 points, 14 boards and 11 assists in a win over Portland in November of 1988.

26 years later, Payton’s son — Gary Payton II, a junior college transfer on the Beavers — became the second player in program history to do it, as he finished with 10 points, 12 boards and 10 assists, not to mention six steals, in a 71-43 win over Grambling State.

“It means a lot to me,” Payton II said. “I had a hint in the second half that I was close and I want to thank Coach Tinkle and my teammates for achieving such a special honor.”

Gary Payton II joins his dad as only Oregon State players with triple-doubles

Triple Dub is great but he isn't near the player his dad was.

Late second rounder though sure. Do we even have any of those left?

I didn't even know he played for them, that's very cool.

Wayne tinkle. And he just recruited a top ten class for next year :D

More like top 15 (ranked 15th by ESPN and 16th by 247Sports Composite ranking). I'm not sure this indicates he's a great recruiter. His top two recruits are his own son and the son of one of his assistant coaches. He definitely benefited from some nepotism, but whatever works. Does he have any more kids?

Who cares? I think he has preven himself to be a great coach. If he turns around the program, more recruits will come.

I'm just saying, don't count on a top 15 recruiting class every year based on his 2015 class. He had a good 4-year run at Montana, but 9 games into an incredibly weak non-conference schedule is a little early to talk about turning the program around. But, maybe getting his son and his assistant's son will be just what they need to get the program on the national map. Too son to say.

Awesome pun!

God, I actually remember that Triple Double by Payton back in 88.

Is that Gary Payton ii or Gary Payton 11? The Blazers could use a player that goes to 11.

Wayne Tinkle is far and away the best basketball coach the Beavers have had since Ralph Miller. Now he just needs to be able to recruit to little 'ol Corvallis and the Beavs will be golden.

I'll take it. Success breeds success. (see what I did there?)
